  1. Worm vs planetary any advantages/disadvantages?

    1. The Ramsey worm-drive winch is built to operate for frequent heavy duty winching. This is an old design, as bullet-proof as they get, and very dependable for everyday use if necessary. You will find Ramsey worm-drive winches on most tow rigs that see 24/7 use. The planetary drive costs much less, maybe faster, and probably is your best buy for isolated, infrequent winching; like getting a vehicle out of a ditch once a month. I can't think of any design disadvantage to worm-drive, only the added cost.

    2. Worm gear winches offer better pulling power and longer duty cycles, the worm gear winches will not turn backwards eliminating backspooling or accidentally releasing under load, this design is also significantly easier on the winch motor. The planetary gear design offers a good combination of pulling power & speed, the gears rotate around a central gear which transfers power to an outer ring, this allows the winch to pull in the load very quickly although with the planetary gear design the motors tend to overheat faster resulting in a shorter duty cycle.

    1. The Ramsey Front Mount 12 Volt Winch can be used for a maximum of 2 minutes full load run time and then allowed to cool for 30-45 minutes.
