I was skeptical of that too. It has metal strap attached to one end of the chain that helps position the chain with the cutting side down. I can't explain how it works, but it works. I probably cut 12 or 15 limbs with it yesterday, and only had to see-saw the rope a few times to get the chain to flip down properly. It just works.

How do you insure that the cutting side of the chain ends up against the tree?

The saw has a built in weight (small flat piece of metal) that turns the saw so the teeth are down toward the branch. If the teeth happen to be pointed upward, the ropes can be jockeyed back and forth and it will turn into the correct position.

There is a weight riveted to one end of the chain. When you throw the rope over the limb, pull the trailing edge taught at about 45°, and the weight will orient the saw so the teeth will be on the limb side. (It is explained in the instructions accompanying the saw). Made a dozen cuts so far - never had an issue getting it oriented so the cutting edge was in contact with the limb.

When you get the rope where you want the cut hold both ends of the rope twisting the leader rope on the way up to ensure having the blade side down at the cut site.

I was wondering about that issue too. But I have to say that somehow 9 out of 10 times you end up with the chain positioned correctly. I assume it has something to do with the traction the rough sides creates vs. the plain side.

There is a metal tang at one end of the chain. When the tang faces down, the teeth are in position to cut. IF the tang is up, you have to "whip" the rope a few times to get it to roll over.

According to the instructions that come with saw model # CS-48, there is a "flip tab" (counter-weight) at the end of the chain that will turn the chain (if necessary) to keep the teeth side of the chain down toward the limb.

The attached small metal piece attached at one end of the saw provides the weight to rotate the chainsaw via gravity so the cutting side is against the limb. It does require some manipulation to get it right.

After throwing the rope over the limb you are cutting, you can use a small flick of your wrists to flip the chain if needed. Keeping very slight tension with both hands while wiggling the rope should help in turning it over.

Depending on the height of limb you want to trim, you need the corresponding length of rope on each end of the chainsaw tool. i.e. the limb is 25 feet high from ground you will need 25 feet of rope plus 12 feet on one end of the saw and the same on the other end to avoid being underneath the limb you are cutting.

maximum height to cut
It appears like the average limb height you can reach safely is 25ft - is this correct? Can additional rope be added to each side to reach higher limbs and still be effective and safe?
-
Warrior79· 10 years ago
Additional rope can be added. The limitation would then be how high/far one could accurately throw the weighted bag to reach your target branch.

I don't see any reason more rope couldn't be added. Be aware, though that if, as in my recent case, there are multiple limbs and you only want to cut one or selected ones, it may take several line throws to get the rope/chain over the intended limb. And, my limbs were just about at the full reach of the ropes that come wit the saw. The higher the limbs, the tougher the throws. I considered using fishing line and a weight as a heaving line to shoot through the gap I needed and then pull the rope saw line after. But, luckily, on about the 20th throw, success.

I believe the rope can be extended to gain a little working height as long as the added rope doesn't stretch too much.

Additional rope can be added to extend the length of existing rope on this high limb chain saw and still be effective and safe. Reaching higher limbs could be more difficult.
