  1. What is the best rope to use for the capstan winch

    1. I've checked prices every where. The rope that is sold with this winch is fairly priced. Other rope is cheaper but you can expect it to break at any time. Get good rope from Portable Winch. You will worry a lot less.

    2. I have used a 1/2 inch, low stretch rope to pull some pretty heavy logs over rough terrain and never had a problem. The rope I use is rated for 8100 lbs. despite the fact I never drag anything more than a thousand pounds or so. If you click on the Accessory tab for the winch you can purchase one in three different lengths. (P.S. don't use a rope that has a lot of stretch to it. That rules out most of what is available in hardware stores)

    3. The best rope to use on the Portable Gas-Powered Capstan Winch is an 8100 pound tensile strength rope.

  2. capstan sizes

    I need to pull in a light load (fish pot) from 300 ft. Are there larger capstans that can be attached to increase line speed?

    1. This comes standard with a 57mm capstan. Optional 85mm is available, but you will find smaller of the two easier to control. That's important.

  3. Will 9/16" or 3/4" rope work with this, or strictly 1/2"?

    1. Per the manual, We recommend using double-braided polyester rope with a
      minimum diameter of 10 mm (3/8''). Maximum rope diameter is 16 mm (5/8"). For most
      situations, we recommend using 12 or 13 mm (1/2'') double braid polyester rope.

  4. What is the Yellow item on the logs in the video?

    1. The yellow item is called a "skidding cone" that is designed to prevent snags and catching when placed in front of material pulling a load that might have branches, limbs, appendages caught in movement.

    1. Among the accessories for this unit that can be purchased are a skidding cone to prevent snags when winching through forested area, a case to hold the winch and accessories, a padded waterproof case, an optional capstan drum that is 3-3/8 inches diameter, a portable winch rope bag with shoulder straps capable of holding 328 feet of 1/2 inch rope, a portable winch tree/pole mount for anchoring, a bundle of 1/2 x 328 8200 lb capacity tow rope and 1/2 x 492 feet of same capacity tow rope.   6. Do you sell the PCW5000HS (High Speed) version?

    They make a High Speed version with a different gear ratio. It can use either size capstan and will lift 350kg. Can we buy it from Northern or do we need to go to the Canadian manufacturer?
