  1. Does the generator need a engine block heater in Ohio?

    1. We haven't needed and on the units I service here in PA. That said it never hurts.
      We do load test the battery every six months.

    2. For our automatic standby generators, if you expect the temperature to drop below freezing, we recommend utilizing a 5W-30 Synthetic oil, which can be used year round. We also recommend using a cold weather kit, which includes a battery warmer and a crankcase heater. Using the correct oil and cold weather kit will allow the generator to start and run in below freezing temperatures. There are no other heaters or accessories that would be required for cold weather starting, provided the cold weather kit is properly installed.

    3. In extremely cold weather conditions a block heater is recommended. Northern does carry the cold weather kit which includes an automatic thermostatically controlled battery pad warmer and a crankcase heater.

  2. What size battery do I nees for my Model 6053 17 Kw Generac Generator

    I am waiting on delivery for my 17 KW Generator and need to know what battery I need to purchase

    2. The battery required for the 17kW unit, model 6053, is a Group 26R, 12 Volt, 525 cold-cranking amps minimum. We do recommend utilizing a wet-cell battery.

  3. I HAVE 200 AMP SERVICE DO I REQUIRE 200 TRANSFER SWITCH

    1. Yes the transfer switch goes between the meter base and the existing panel. The transfer panel comes with a service rated disconnect.

    2. You do want the transfer switch to match the service that you have; so in your case you would want a 200 amp transfer switch.

  5. What is the clearance of the generator from a House

    1. The intake and exhaust, which are the short ends of the generator, and the front side of the generator require a minimum clearance of 36” from a wall. However, the distance required from the unit to any window, vent, door, opening into the home, an overhang, and trees, plants or shrubs over 12” in height is a minimum of 60”. Further information on proper installation can be found in the installation guidelines.

The Guardian Series automatic standby generators feature a one hour fire rated enclosure, and are in compliance with NFPA 37 Article 4.1.4 Condition 2 for clearance from combustible construction. This means that the back side of the generator can be installed a minimum of 18” from a surface. The intake and exhaust, which are the short ends of the generator, and the front side of the generator require a minimum clearance of 36” from a wall. However, the distance required from the unit to any window, vent, door, opening into the home, an overhang, and trees, plants or shrubs over 12” in height is a minimum of 60”. Further information on proper installation can be found in the installation guidelines. We recommend contacting your local inspector, as state and local codes may vary, and will supersede manufacturer recommendations for installation near a structure.

  7. How much natural gas is used per hour at 1/2 load.

    I asked this question previously but apparently was mis-understood because I did not get the answer that I was looking for. So I will re-state the question more clearly.
    How many therms of natural gas does this generator use in one hour running at 1/2 load. And how many therms of natural gas does this generator use in one hour at full load ? Thank You for you reply.

    p.s Please reply in therms as that is how I am billed for my natural gas useage.

    1. The fuel volume and pressure requirements for natural gas at full load are 5-7” water column at 261,000 BTU/hr. For half load, the fuel volume and pressure requirements are 5-7” water column at 183,000 BTU/hr. 1 therm = 100,000 BTU's.

  9. How clean an electrical signal does this unit produce? I need computer-grade electrical output... does this produce that?

    1. < 5% THD. I recommend panel surge protection on any service and surge protection at the load for any electronics (computer, TV, etc).

  10. How much fuel,(L.P.) does this burn per hour?

    1. under full load it will burn about 2.6 gals of propane an hour.
      however you will not be pulling more than 50% for the avg use.
      a 500 gal tank ran mine for 27 days with a/c on during day for an avg of 4-6 hours. my house is lpg on most appliances and avg load is only 42%.
