I used a metal grinder to cut off brackets and painted entire ring with high heat paint just for an added measure. Was very easy. Fit nice and snug with the lip resting nicely on blocks

Can this ring be dropped in as the liner for a block fire pit?
I am building a circular fire pit of concrete paver (wall) blocks. Can this fire ring be dropped in as the liner, with the lip resting on top of the blocks?

Yes, I was able to build paver blocks around mine to fit nicely. (I worked "around" the metal anchor tabs). Depending on actual blocks choose, it is "close" on the lip in some sense. I used an alternating patten of block and small pavers and could slightly inset the pavers to improve the stability.

Absolutely, I used mine for that exact thing.

Yes, but it does have flanges welded to the outside of the ring for the anchors that secure the ring into concrete. You may have to cut those flanges off.

Yes I just did this. See my picture. There are two phlanges that you will need to work around and you can see the spacing on the inside of my picture if you look closely. I just haven't got aroung to cutting a block to fit.

This would be great as a liner for inside a block or brick fire pit!

Is the cooking grate permanently attached or is it removable?
-
Pinwheel· 11 years ago
The cooking grate is removable, but the mount for the grate is welded inside the ring.

-
MShep· 12 years ago
The swivel grate is not permanently attached but fits into the collar and is designed to be bolted in from the bottom, or not, depending on whether you want to be able to lift the grate out to set it aside when finished cooking.

On this fire ring with grate the grate can be removed. There is a single retaining bolt that holds the grate and the post that it swivels on into place. If you don't put that bolt in, anytime you want to remove the grate you can simply pull out the swivel post and the grate and put it to the side.

RuRuDog· 12 years ago
You can remove it but there will see be a post part that holds the assembly which is welded to the ring.

ScottGP· 12 years ago
It is removable. It is simply held in place with a nut/bolt.

Should the cooking grate be repainted?
I believe the manual indicated the ring itself should be repainted with the proper paint as necessary but that the cooking grate itself NOT be repainted. Is this true? If so, is there any maintenance necessary for the grate itself?
The fire ring looks great by the way...I am very happy with my purchase.

I would think if you are concerned about rust, periodically you would want to take some steel wool to the rust and some high heat tolerance black paint and touch it up. We actually cook on an old BBQ grill grate which sits on top of this grate and periodically clean that. As long as you use it regularly the grate rust shouldn't be a problem. Bars are pretty thick.

I have the same ring w/ grate and also a BBQ grill box, the manual for the BBQ grill box says to leave it greasy after use, so as to protect it from rust, The original paint on mines has come off pretty much all, If you wish to repaint use a non toxic paint, me personally I don't want to be eating paint chips toxic or not...lol.. the next burn will help in cleaning, the box or ring itself can be painted as often as needed to keep that new look, I would think the above goes just as well for the fire pit ring since it stays out in the elements just as the BBQ grill box. Hope this helps.

Treat your grate much the same as the grill in your barbeque. Scrub it down with a grill brush after each use and spray it with a non stick cooking oil to help prevent rusting between uses.

The manufacturer recommends using a bristol brush to remove rust prior to painting it. Then apply a high heat enamel paint.

WHAT GAGE STEEL IS THE RING

7 gauge steel or 3/16. It is very heavy duty steel. It took me forever to cut off the tabs with my angle grinder.

The Steel Fire Ring is manufactured from 3/16" or 7 gauge steel.

Can this be put in the ground.
-
Pinwheel· 11 years ago
You could, however I would not want to. The fire ring has holes drilled around the base to allow air to enter so the fire can get oxygen. It will still burn, but not as good if you block off the air holes.

It is designed to be at grade-level, allowing the pivoting hinge pins, which are buried, to facilitate swinging the ring "up" in order to clean out the ashes.

-
ProductExpert40· 13 years ago
This steel fire ring with cooking grate is only 7 inches high. If you bury the ring into the ground that will not leave enough room for the wood or for the grate to fit over the wood to allow cooking of the food.

Does the grill height adjust?
I read that the grill surface is permanently attached and that the handle doesn't pass over the fire but I am not able to find anything about the height of the grill over the fire or if it were adjustable.
-
Pinwheel· 11 years ago
This is the non-adjustable model. The cooking grate just swivels over the fire. The height is perfect for cooking though.

Cook food directly on grill?
Is the cooking grate intended for direct food contact or, instead, is it painted?
-
ColoradoCamper· 7 years ago
Direct contact once the grill has been used without food to burn-off any residue and other contaminants. Foods would need to larger pieces to preclude food from falling through. Small food can be placed inside a grilling tray.

ProductExpert40· 7 years ago
The grill is painted but with a high heat non-toxic paint that is designed for direct contact with food.

I noticed in the video the handle is curved, but in the pictures the handle is straight? Did the design change?
And when building a fire pit should the inner diameter be exactly 32" to accommodate the fire ring or should it be smaller for a snug fit?
thanks much
-
BobH42· 9 years ago
The handle is straight but it has a bend where it attaches to the grate. BTW, the grate is threaded for the handle (in addition to a nut you put on afterward) which impressed me as to the quality of the unit.

ProductExpert41· 11 years ago
The handle on this grate is straight like shown in the picture. The outer diameter size that you choose is personal preference. The outer diameter should be at least 32" but can be made smaller for a snugger fit.
