Does this unit have a pilot light? I want to run only when needed, would I have to re-light each time of use?

No. It has electronic spark ignition which is the best kind on the market today. It's the way to go. This is a very high tech, but simple unit.

The MHU series unit heaters use a direct spark ignition system. There is no pilot necessary as the spark lights the main burner as the gas valve is turned on.

How loud is this unit in a 28x28 foot building?

This unit is kinda loud - it has two fans (1 exhaust and 1 blower fan) and you can hear and feel the unit inside the house while it is running. I have been thinking about adding some rubber gaskets to add some dampening effect for the unit. I have a 2 1/2 car garage and it heats nicely, but it not like a regular electric heater which are very quiet - you can definitely tell it’s up there and running.

Surprisingly quiet. It works just like a HVAC unit for in a house. When it is off it is perfectly quiet. When it starts up you hear the combustion fan (very quiet) then when the heat is high enough the recirculation fan (a little louder). The fan is pretty small and quiet. You could stand below it and have a normal conversation without having to raise your voice.

I installed the 50KBtu, and I'm very pleased with the sound level. I mounted mine rigid to the open ceiling truss' to dampen vibrations.

The item # 27457 can be used with a digital, programmable 24 volt thermostat. You would use the standard red and white wire connections for the thermostat and then also use the green wire connection for the digital.

You need clearance, air gap. The minimum air gap clearances are in the manual that comes with the unit. You also can get them online here within Northern Tool.

A 20 amp breaker would require a 12 or 10 gauge wire.

For a 20 amp supply and breaker, you have to use no smaller than 12/2 wire. White 14/2 wire cannot be connected to a 20 amp breaker per NEC.

Inverted Mounting?
has anyone mounted this unit in the inverted 180 degree position outlined in the user guide? I don't want to run the vent directly behind the intake fan/blower and believe that inverting it will allow the vent to come out from the (now) left side of the unit with the fan on the (now) right side. Besides having all the nameplates upside down is there any other issues?

Yes. Simple to turn it over and install. It even came with a label to correct the upside down label.

When installing in the 180° inverted position, the fan housing would be at the bottom of the unit. Please check you local codes and ordinance before installing to ensure this type of instal is allowed in your area.

Which unit 50 or 80k btu for a 1000 sq ft garage?
My garage is two car, pretty well insulated, and just under 1000 sq ft. Is there an advantage to going with the 80k btu unit? Which would be more efficient to keep it around 60 degrees?

Thank you for your inquiry. The 80K BTU unit would turn on and off and run for short periods of time, but the 50K unit would run for a longer period of time to heat up the garage. The 50K is recommended for 1000 square feet, but an 80K can work.

It is very simple to convert this heater to LP. You would just take a flat head screw driver and remove the spring from the gas valve and replace it with the LP spring.
