What are some of the uses, reasons one would want a GMRS radio pack?
What are some of the things I might need this set up for? Like If my cell phone loses its signal, it would come in very handy I would assume. But what are some of the other uses/reasons people buy these set ups for? Thanks!

These radios are used by hikers, hunters, skiers, campers, fisherman, farmers and many more. The reception is better than with cell phones and they are clearer. Take them anywhere you wouldn't trust your cell phone.

How far can i go and still talk to the other person
Why does one review say they cant hear anything after only one mile but the specs say 30+ miles? I get that a desert would give you perfect range because theres no mountains or buildings but in real life, like around my hometown of Columbia, SC, how far do they actually work and what causes the signal to get lost?
-
AutomationEng· 11 years ago
we use them within a one mile radius and inside, building to building. Have never tried to see how far away they work

The one negative reviewer out of 12 great reviews on this product may have been in an area where something large directly blocked the signal. For instance if you were standing on one side of mountain and the other user was standing on the other side, the signal could be blocked. In most cases, the radios provide much greater range than just a mile like the reviewer claims they experienced.
In a city location you should get much better reception than the reviewer claimed they experienced. Solid objects and density of objects between radios are the most common cause of lower range.Helpful?

Can the rechargeable battery pack be replaced with regular AA batteries if necessary?
-
1940· 12 years ago
Yes, but the battery pack lasts much longer than regular batteries. I checked on replacement rechargeable battery packs and the price was very reasonable. You will enjoy this radio.

Do you need a license to operate?
-
mike0407· 13 years ago
If you operate on the gmrs frequencies the FCC does require you to have an FCC license, but for personnel family type use I don't think you,d have any problems without a license.

The radio is a consumer rated product, a license is not required.

The radios are waterproof protected from splashing water on them but not from dropping them or submerging them in a body of water.

Would this be compatible with the MIDLAND XT511 Base Camp Radio?
-
Clay1970· 14 years ago
Yes they work together. Note that there are more channels on the Handhelds units, so be sure that they are all on the same channel. We get busy channels here and frequently use different channels, So a few times I thought I had a problem, Until i put the base unit on the same channel. LOL
