  1. what is the range of this unit? in miles.

    1. If the weather and atmospheric conditions are perfect I've seen up to 20 miles (very, very rare). It also depends upon how the antenna is mounted on your vehicle (vehicle's surfaces can add to or detract from the "reception plane") and whether or not you've properly tuned your antenna, which most people don't do. Tuning involves hooking an SWR meter (available from most radio or electronic dealers) in series between the radio and antenna, keying the mic to transmit, then removing the cap on the tip of the mounted antenna and adjusting the knob in or out until the signal is maximized. Antenna placement and tuning are critical for maximum benefit and radio longevity but most people just throw one on the vehicle then blame the radio when it doesn't meet expectations. FireStik Antenna has outstanding information on their website regarding antenna setup as well as a wealth of other info. No, I am not affiliated with the company!
