This benchtop drill press will work to cut a 4" hole through 3/4" wood using a hole saw, provided the following operating guidelines are strictly followed:
Set to Lowest Speed (630 RPM): The drill press belt must be adjusted to its lowest pulley setting (630 RPM). For a 4" hole saw in wood, the recommended speed is generally between 400 and 600 RPM. Running it at 630 RPM is just above the recommended range—do not use any higher speed setting.
Chuck & Arbor Compatibility: The 1/2" chuck capacity easily accommodates standard hole saw arbors (typically 7/16" or 3/8" shanks).
Slow, Steady Feed with Peck Drilling: Because a 4" hole saw creates substantial cutting torque and the motor is 2/3 HP, apply light, steady downward pressure. Do not force the cut to avoid stalling the motor. Back the hole saw out frequently (peck drilling) to clear sawdust and prevent heat buildup.
Clamp the Workpiece (Safety First): A 4" hole saw generates significant rotational torque. The workpiece must be securely clamped to the worktable—never hold the wood by hand.
Backing Board: Place a scrap piece of wood underneath the workpiece to prevent blowout or tear-out when breaking through the bottom.
