would this helmet be good for a welding student?

Absolutely. The only place I would think twice about using this were if I needed to do a LOT of overhead work or if I needed it to offer any impact protection. For a student in a shop setting, this is a great product.

According to my kid, this is exactly what they use for their "good" helmets in his high school metals class.

This helmet would be a good choice for welders of all skill levels, and can handle many different welding processes.

Yes. I bought this a few months ago when I was trying to improve my welding. I was using a standard helment non auto darkening before. I also added a diopter (cheater lens) so that I could see the end of my wire better. Good helmet for the price.

This helmet uses 2 AAA batteries. You can use rechargeables if you choose, or conventional non-rechargeables. Batteries are easy to replace.

I am using standard alkaline in mine with no issues what so ever, more dependable than NI-CAD or NIHM as they loose a lot of charge when sitting between uses.
The way this helmet works is that it starts and functions from the batteries until there is enough power in the solar cell to operate the helmet, which is all of the time outdoors and any time you are laying a bead, Then that takes over. It isn't really a "charging" circuit.

Is this helmet suitable for acetylene welding?
Is the grinding mode #5 or darker?
Originally posted on Please see replacement item#s 48739 or 48740. Northern Industrial Welders Auto-Darkening Welding Helmet with Grind Mode - Black with Flames-
BAM6· 13 years ago
The grinding mode turns off the auto darkening so you will be looking through the light green shade but I don't know what the shade level is. It is too dark for me to use with grinding so I replace it with a clear shield. I use it with my plasma cutter on grinding mode and it works great.

This helmet is suitable for acetylene welding. The shade number on the grinding mode is a fixed 3.5.
