The Justrite 21 Gallon Oily Waste Can is not made to be used as a parts cleaner. I recommend one of our wash tanks instead. The primary danger posed by aluminum dust is fire and explosion. This is why it is important to always practice good housekeeping around processes that produce aluminum dust. The 21-gallon oily waste can model 09700 is physically capable of storing aluminum dust safely, provided it is emptied at least daily to prevent accumulation.

Another consideration when using an oily waste can to contain aluminum dust is the potential to run afoul of OSHA - specifically, the Hazard Communication Standard (1910.1200) requiring the proper labeling of containers used to store or handle hazardous substances. Aluminum is on OSHA's (and others') "hazardous substances" list, and thus requires proper labeling. This can is supplied labeled as an "Oily Waste Can," and thus using it for aluminum dust would require that it first be re- (and properly) labeled: ALUMINUM DUST ONLY. This is important not only for OSHA compliance purposes, but also due to real safety implications. Aluminum dust, when exposed to a metal oxide (like rust) and an ignition source can create an aluminothermic reaction that can start a large Class D (combustible metal) fire. Therefore, it is critical that the oily waste can is not only marked appropriately when used to contain aluminum dust, but also that personnel have been trained on the proper use and emptying of the can.

Justrite Oily Waste Cans (OWC) are manufactured galvanized steel a fire resistant material as required by OSHA 1926.252(e). But there is more to an OWC design than that. The OWC self-closing lid limits the inside of the OWC of the oxygen that is required to support combustion. The self-closing lid guards the contents from sparks or other heat sources. Oily rags can create an exothermic chemical reaction from the polymerization of oil drying in the absence of air. This is a chemical reaction known to start fires. Always store oily rags in an approved OWC.

We discourage the use of liner bags in Oily Waste Cans (OWC). The liner can interfere with the OWC's lid fully closing. A liner can also create a path for an oxygen supply to the bottom of the can. Both conditions defeat the purpose the self-close lid and its ability to deprive the container of oxygen, which inhibits combustion.

The opening mechanism for the 21-gallon oily waste can model 09700 is located on the exterior of the can. Thus, there should not be an issue with the glue sticking the mechanism. However, if glue gets onto the top of the can where the lid meets the can body, it is possible that the glue may cause the lid to stick to the can.
