Built-in battery charger charges battery while connected with the tow vehicle. Kit includes a break-away switch and cable and three mounting bolts. For use with trailer equipped with up to 4 trailer brakes. Includes a 5 Amp 12VDC rechargeable battery. Break-away kits activate trailer brakes upon separation from tow vehicle. Most states and provinces require trailer break-away kits.

  1. Does this Kit come with the battery charger?

    If not, do you guys sell them separate?

    1. The battery charger is built in. When wired correctly, the battery charges any time the trailer is connected to your vehicle.

    2. The battery charger is included in the unit and charges the battery when it is properly wired and connected to the tow vehicle.

    3. Yes. The battery charger is built into the electronics of the battery case. The unit draws power from the auxillary power feed from the towing vehicle, so the hitch plug must be the 6 pin or 7 pin configuration.

  2. Can the battery be mounted in any direction?

    I purchased the Tap Engager Kit and was wondering if I could mount the battery case with the face plate horizotal or vertical

    1. Mounting direction really doesn't matter since the battery is a gel cell; no liquid can spill.

The orientation shouldn't affect the functioning of the battery or the electronics, but you need to be able to access the latch side of the front panel and leave clearance for it to swing open to replace the battery. You also want to make sure the front panel is visually accessible and within reach so you can check the battery condition via the LED lights and test button.

  3. what type of battery ,wet,gel or other, is in the tap brake away brake system?

    1. It uses a gel cell. Replacements should be available at most any store that sells batteries.

    2. The breakaway kit comes with a standard 12v gel type battery.

    1. I don't know if Northern sells them separately. They may be able to order one, however these batteries are standard gel cell that can be found at most any battery store.

  6. The plug that detaches when a breakaway occurs has snapped off. Is it possible to purchase just the plug and attached cable (which connects to the towing vehicle)? It is shown in the forefront of the unit displayed in the picture.

  7. How do you open battery compartment to access the battery?

    1. There is a zip tie that can be cut near the top of the unit to open the battery compartment.

  8. Does this unit hook up to brakes on my Jeep Wrangler flat towed vehicle to make it stop if disconnected from my RV ? Will it lock up brakes on wrangler?

    1. This devise is only for trailers with working electric braking systems.

  9. Does this control lights as well on my trailer?

    1. This is only designed to control the brakes in the event the trailer breaks free from the towing vehicle and will not control the lights as well.
