What is required for maintenance? Are the gears in oil?
-
Zwartewoude· 9 years ago
The unit is sealed with grease. I only repacked mine because I took the axles out to have some machine work done. Basically, no maintenance.

Where would you install a brake on this axle? Do you need to install it on the drive sprocket or will it work on the drive shaft?
-
Zwartewoude· 9 years ago
I would fabricate a disc brake on the opposite side of the housing from the drive sprocket. You would need to replace the four bolts with longer ones, however.

I would not mount a brake to the differential itself, it would only apply braking force to the wheel with the least traction!
Mount a disk to each side of the axle(2) so each wheel has braking action.Helpful?

ProductExpert38· 13 years ago
The brake assembly can be installed several places depending on other components that are being used. It can be mounted to the differential section of the axle or toward the end near the hubs. Each application varies, therefore one location may be more beneficial or accessible than another.

does it work as a limited slip or one wheel drive?
Can it be made to run LSD?
-
ProductExpert40· 11 years ago
This axle does not work as limited slip or one wheel drive and cannot be made to run LSD. This axle has a differential style/type that is gear driven with double gears inside.

-
hazmat456· 11 years ago
no this is not limited slip, it is a open style that will send power to the wheel with the least resistance

TheAnimal· 12 years ago
This is a conventional open style diff. You would not be able to make it a limited slip diff. You would have to re-design the whole center section as a whole.
So depending on traction is equal on both sides the two sides would pull together. Then if one side gets in mud, the other side on good traction the torque will be sent to the wheel with no traction and would be one wheel drive. This IS NOT a limited slip diff, where both sides would pull together in bad spots.Helpful?

Can this be used on the street?
Need to know if it’s just for off road, or can it be driven on asphalt.
-
Chumbucket· 8 years ago
Im using it on both with my cyclekart but I did add 2 more bearings to the shaft for support due to the lack of bearings on the carrier

ProductExpert41· 8 years ago
This axle can be used on an asphalt surface. Since this axle is designed to be used with a go-kart, it is not legal to use it on the street.

I can not find sprocket with holes to match diff
I am trying to attach a drive sprocket to the differential housing with the four bolts. I can not find any sprockets with matching bolt patterns. What exact spec is the bolt pattern? bolt circle diameter?

Chumbucket· 8 years ago
I had to cut and drill new holes on my sprocket ,I had the same problem

ProductExpert43· 10 years ago
At this time Northern does not offer a sprocket for this differential axle. You will need a 4 bolt pattern of 2 3/4" x 1".

Could I mount my drive sprocket on the axle rather than on the diff housing?
-
Chumbucket· 8 years ago
I guess you could ,but why??The diff is made so you don't have to,it helps get more power to the ground while turning corners

A sprocket would have to be mounted on the the differential housing for this axle, it would not be able to mount onto the axle itself.

is the differential in the center or is there an off set ?if so whats the measurements ?
-
TheAnimal· 12 years ago
If memory is correct the center of the differential is in the middle of the casting from left to right. In the middle section is the cross for the spider gears. To answer your question there is a offset that the gear bolts to. Hope this helps
