  1. How clean is the power?

    I've had problems with some generators not "playing nicely" with the electronic controls on my home heating system, or damaging some other electronic devices.

    What is the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) on this generator?

    Does it use a brushless alternator?

    Is it safe for use with electronic devices?

    1. The THD on this unit is between 23-28%. It would not be safe for sensitive electronics. It is brushless.
      For safe harmonic distortion you want a generator at 5% or less. The Generac GP series item #14753 would be safe for your electronics. You might also be interested in the Northstar #165601 with less than 5% THD.

New appliances with electronic control boards, such as furnaces or air conditioning units, can require total harmonic distortion to be below 5% - the total harmonic distortion for the GP Series portable units will be above 5%. If you are looking for a unit with a cleaner power output, we would recommend considering either our XP Series gasoline powered units or our automatic home standby generators. However, you should also check the requirements of the home heating system for any additional specifications.

  2. Is the fuel tank metal or plastic and does it have a drain valve?

    1. This generator is equipped with a steel fuel tank and does not have a drain valve, always use a fuel stabilizer if leaving gas in tank, please see product below for draining options.

    2. The GP5500 has a steel fuel tank. It does not have a drain valve, so we recommend using a siphon pump to empty fuel from the fuel tank and then run the unit until any remaining fuel in the system is completely used. Alternatively, you can use a fuel stabilizer according to the manufacturer's instructions.

    Can this generator be hooked to a 30 amp transfer switch?

    1. Yes, it can be connected to a manual transfer switch. A three pole transfer switch is needed for these units to work properly.

    2. Yes, it can be connected to a manual transfer switch. A three pole transfer switch is needed for these units to work properly. Additionally, because Generac portable generators are bonded neutral and manual transfer switches are floating neutral, you will need a transfer switch that also switches the neutrals. Generac does not manufacture manual transfer switches, so you will need to work with an electrician to specify the correct transfer switch.
