I build wood splitters and always use a 6.5 HP engine
with this pump and have a fast cycle time,
This pump is meant to run at full throttle, 3,800rpm.
Running it at half throttle will give you less power and a slower cycle time.

will a 6.5 hp engime run this pump, with a 24in. cylinder w/2in. ram

In my opinion, a 6.5 hp engine will be fine. My 7.5 hp runs this fine at 1/2 to 3/4 throttle. It does not lug down or try to stall the engine at all. The second stage will kick in when the splitter hits a knot or a dense piece of wood. When this happens it is like the engine has no resistance at all but the ram will slow down and power through the wood. I would even say that this would probably work with a 5 hp engine, but would not be as efficient because it would need to run at a slightly higher throttle setting to keep the engine from working too hard when the pump is in the first stage or " normal running stage " when it is moving the rated 13.6 gpm of hydraulic oil.

This Haldex hydraulic pump only requires a 6 HP engine to operate properly so your engine will do the job.

Minimum horsepower?
According to the product description, this pump requires 6HP or higher. But according to the product manual (pdf), it is only 5HP. Which is correct?
-
mrpilotron· 12 years ago
I installed this pump on a 5 hp engine and it works OK, but I can stall the engine before it builds full pressure. I get around that problem by bumping the lever a few times so the engine can recover between bumps. This is only required when it first bites into a big log. The rest of the time it operates quickly without bogging the engine. If I were doing it over, I would choose the 11 GPM pump for a 5 HP engine.

The 5 HP rating refers to 5 HP @ 2000 psi but the maximum psi is 3000 psi which would require the 6 HP rating. So to be able to utilize the full capability of the pump, the correct rating is 6 HP.

Haldex hydraulic pump - 13.6 GPM 2-stage,#1001506
Does this pump run and work in eather direction?
-
Welderbob· 13 years ago
No. This pump is meant to run in the clockwise direction only. Looking at your engine from the rope starter side of the engine will tell you the direction of the engine, normally most engines are clockwise. Since the pump in mounted directly behind the engine, the pump runs the same direction.

Do you have a pump that can be mounted vertical?
-
BigWillie· 15 years ago
In general, hydraulic pumps are not sensitive to orientation. However, for best results, the pump should be mounted in such a way that its inlet is always below the oil level in the tank.

ProductExpert25· 15 years ago
Yes, in a vertical application a special mounting bracket is required which we do not carry. The engine must have a cast iron flywheel on it.

Question The 2 stage will bring the cylinder in quicker and then goes to the power mode?
1 answer-
ProductExpert6· 2 years ago
Yes, when the hydraulic pump goes into 2-stage mode, it will provide a high flow rate to quickly move the cylinder into position, then transition to a lower flow rate with higher pressure to hold the position and apply power. It essentially switches from speed mode to a power mode.

Does this pump have to be run at 3600 rpm? Or can it be run lower. I would like to have a slower ram speed
1 answer-
ProductExpert5· 9 years ago
The pump operates at a maximum RPM of 3600 for effective range of operation. A slower speed can be used but will affect the performance of the two-stage function it is used for.
