Preparing Your Generator for the Season

Being prepared is always important but it can make all the difference when it comes to weathering storm season. A single storm can knock out electrical power for days, leaving you and your family helpless.

Before the high winds and heavy rains hit, make sure your generator is ready to go. The best way to do that is to go through a preventative maintenance list.

  • Do a quick visual inspection of your generator. Look for corrosion, frayed wires, broken or loose parts.
  • Change the oil in your generator. Refer to your owner’s manual for the proper procedure.
  • Remove old gasoline from your fuel tank and replace with fresh gasoline.
  • Check the air filter to ensure no dirt or damage negatively affects the performance.
  • Inspect the spark plug and clean or replace if necessary.

Test Before the Storm

When you are in the midst of a power outage is not the time to find out your generator doesn’t work. Start it up before the season and power a few smaller appliances, such as your cell phone charger, toaster, etc., for a few minutes. This is something you should do once a month during storm season.

Stock Up on Supplies

Make sure you have supplies on hand before you need them. Having to run to a parts store is inconvenient. Stock up on items you may need, including oil, filters, fuel, extension cords and plugs and a cover.
