Even though a carrier fully loaded (GTW) has a weight capacity of 2,000lbs., if the tongue weight (TW) capacity is 200lbs., cargo must be limited to 200lbs.
Hitches are divided into 5 classes, which help you determine which type is appropriate for your vehicle, and ultimately, the weight limit for your carrier’s load.
Class 1 has a 1 1/4in. receiver size and is commonly used for cars and crossovers; it has a gross total weight (GTW) of 2,000lbs. and a tongue weight (TW) of 200lbs.
Class 2 also has a 1 1/4in. receiver size and is typically used for cars, crossovers and minivans, has a GTW of 3,500lbs. and a TW of 350lbs.
Class 3 has a 2in. receiver size and is typically used for trucks and SUVs; it has a GTW of 8,000lbs. and a TW of 800lbs.
Class 4 also has a 2in. receiver size and is typically used for trucks and SUVs; it has a GTW of 10,000lbs. and a TW of 1,000lbs.
Class 5 is divided into two categories: Xtra Duty and Commercial Duty. Xtra Duty has a GTW of 16,000–17,000lbs. and a TW of 2,400lbs.– 2,550lbs. Commercial Duty has a GTW of 18,000lbs.–20,000lbs. and a TW of 2,700lbs.
