Fish Tapes + Rods
Fish tape is a tool for electricians when running new wiring through walls, conduit, or other tight spaces. Made from steel, fiberglass, or nylon, fish tape is designed to be flexible and durable, to snake through bends and twists without getting hung up or breaking. During installations or retrofits, electricians pull wires through electrical conduits or behind walls. The design makes it easy to store and transport, and the length indicators ensure precise wire runs.
It takes about as long as being an apprentice to get good at using fish tape. Skill and technique is required, especially in complex conduit systems or long runs. Electricians often use glow-in-the-dark and non-conductive versions for specific jobs. Some tapes feature built-in reels or interchangeable tips to improve control. On new construction or upgrading existing wiring, fish tape is a practical tool for an electrician’s kit to guide wires where hands can’t reach.
