As a general rule, if your AC device is only drawing 1000W then your DC supply would only need to provide slightly more than 1000W, due to inherent inefficiencies in any inverter. It would be ridiculous to design a 5000W unit that ALWAYS draws the maximum 5000W, regardless of the AC load. Imagine wasting the heat from the equivalent of fifty hundred-watt bulbs glowing inside your inverter when there is no load on the unit.

Does it need 5000 watts to work?
-

-
NPowerExpert· 16 years ago
The input will need be equal to or greater than 5000 watts (416 amps) from a 12 volt source. If you are concerned that you will not have enough power to run this unit, I would suggest going to a smaller inverter.

Limit of batteries
How many 12 volt battery's can I chain to this inverter without overloading it
-
upnorthhere· 12 years ago
The 12v batteries would be the inputs and the overload would depend upon the devices plugged into the outputs. You can attach as many batteries as you want., depending upon how many hours and how many amps you intend to run without having to recharge the batteries.

how many amps can handle
-
upnorthhere· 12 years ago
5000W at 120v would be a little over 40A.
Helpful?
-
NPower11· 12 years ago
This inverter produces 41.66 amps(continuous output up to 5 min. max) split over two duplex outlets. For durations longer than 5 minutes, it produces 33.33 amps combined from the two duplex outlets.

Can you use jumper cables to hook it up temporarily?
-
1PokyDoRight· 10 years ago
Not recommended. This pulls a ton of AMPS, and you need no less than 000 gauge cables to run it at 60% rating and higher. Thin jumper cables will heat up at under 40 amps, causing the unit to be starved of volts and amps. Most jumper cables are to transfer charging action, not power sources.

-
NPowerExpert29· 14 years ago
Jumper cables cannot be used with any NPower Inverters. A loose connection will cause the voltage to drop and may cause the cables to overheat, resulting in equipment damage or fire. Cables with eyelets must be used to ensure a secure connection.

Does my vehicle have to be revved up or will it work at an idle?
-
Subman719· 15 years ago
I will work at idle without a problem! It just has to see the voltage, HOWEVER, you DO NEED to provide adequate cable/power/amps to this inverter directly from a battery(s). I am using 4/0 welding cable directly connected to a Deep Cycle marine battery 2 feet away from the invery PLUS running the 4/0 cable up to the engine compartment batteries. Under full load, this inverter is EXTREMELY power hungry and will trigger the Low Voltage alarm or shut down if it doesn't see enough volts and current!

NPowerExpert29· 15 years ago
If using with your vehicle, the 5000 Watt NPower Inverter would draw directly from the battery, up to 5000 continuous watts, until the battery was drained. The alternator in your vehicle(sizes vary depending on vehicle) will recharge the battery while the car is running, and generally will give slightly more power the higher the RPM of the engine. If the device(s) being powered by the inverter are less than what the alternator is producing at idle, the battery would always stay charged without revving the engine. If drawing more than the alternator can produce, you would begin to drain the battery.

are these units stackable,as in 220?
i was wondering if these inverters can be stacked, coneted to achieve 220,240?what i mean is can you connect 2 inverters to achieve 220 or 240 voltts to run 220 apliances,or do they have to be true signwave inverters to do this?i know the true signwave units can do this, can these, thanks

Are the 20A circuit breakers slow break?
I have a 1.5HP motor that I would like to power. It has 16 full load running amps. The power required to start (inrush) is between 5.4 KW and 8.2 KW depending on the power factor of the motor (starting pF is not published but is generally between .4 and .6) Would the 20A circuit breaker be able to handle this?
-
Subman719· 15 years ago
I am running a 3 HP compressor on once circuit and a 14 inch metal chop saw on the other circuit and it handles both of them at the same time with NO problems!
