Kindling Cracker: The Best Way to Split Wood
Inspiration Strikes
The Kindling Cracker delivers real-world ingenuity from an unlikely source — a school-age student who was determined to avoid injuries from splitting firewood into kindling. The simple, safe and easy-to-use design that began as a science fair project has become a perennial award winner, from science fairs in New Zealand to regional and international recognition from Scientific American, International TeenBusiness, Google and more.
"I am delighted with the effectiveness and simplicity of this tool. It makes short and safe work out of splitting kindling!"
- Tim, Minnesota
Quality, Premium Build
The Kindling Cracker is made in an Australian foundry. It consists of one solid piece of high-quality cast iron, so it's something that your grandkids' grandkids will use to split their own kindling, if cared for and used correctly. The only maintenance it needs is a bit brushing off and maybe a touch of paint from time to time to look like new for generations.
"You must buy one of these! It makes the production of kindling safe, fast and fun. I wish I had this 30 years ago."
- Herman, New Jersey
Safe and Easy to Use
The Kindling Cracker is a top-grade cast iron splitting head mounted inside of a 12in.H cast iron frame. To make a perfect piece of kindling, place a piece of firewood inside the iron safety ring and strike with a blunt instrument, such as a hammer, mallet or even another piece of wood. This drives the wood down onto the splitting wedge for a quick, easy split. There is no need to swing a sharp axe blade dangerously close to your hands. It's the perfect companion for your backyard stack of firewood, creating perfect kindling for your fireplace, fire pit, pizza oven, sauna, barbecue or smoker.
"I can't believe my Kindling Cracker is still in one piece! You guys must make these things out of old UFO parts."
- Bill, Texas

I contacted the company 2 weeks ago bout a larger unit. Their answer:
As you know if your firewood is too large to fit into the safety ring it will be large enough to stand up by itself on a chopping block while you chop it down to size with an axe (at this point your hands are nowhere near the piece of wood), if you need to steady the firewood from falling over then it should be able to fit through your Kindling Cracker and this is where Kindling Cracker is a lot safer for your hands.
Most firewood stacks have random sized wood and lots of it will normally fit into a Kindling Cracker. We tell customers when stacking their firewood to put their smaller bits (with a clean grain) to one side to use in there Kindling Cracker, this way they most likely wouldn’t need to chop any down to size.

Is the wedge height adjustable? I'm splitting up to 24".
-
xraytechie· 10 years ago
Its a solid cast piece that is not adjustable. You will need a standard cord wood to use in it.
Helpful?
-
Bosox40· 10 years ago
No, the height is fixed. 24" would probably work if the support you attach it to is about the same diameter as the base of the Cracker.

24" will be very difficult to split into kindling. It is not designed to split large logs into fireplace pieces. It takes fireplace pieces and turns them into kindling for starting the fire. If you take a couple of your 24" logs and cut them in half you can split up a month's worth of kindling in a few minutes. Works like a charm as long as you don't try to make it do something not designed to do.

Seems to be cast, not adjustable but if your wood is straight grained and doesn't have a bunch of knots it'll likely split 24" without much issue. I'm splitting 18" birch and white spruce, but I'm choosing straight grain and few knots intentionally.

2x4 and xx4 would split it straight away but the board can only be about 18 inches long. Longer and it cannot clear the bottom ring. I guess if your piece you sit the cracker on was the same size as the bottom ring you might get more board to go through but there will be a limit to that.

This Kindling Cracker would be useful for splitting precut (dimensional) lumber. Keep in mind, if the lumber diameter is too small the lumber will rest at an angle and may be difficult to get a clean split.

Is the blade sharpened, or is there a hardened inset to keep wear down?

it is all one piece and the blade is welded into place. I have not had mine long enough to estimate wear. I use mine 4x a week for the last month with no signs of wear. I am splitting black and white oak for kindling.

Oldcrow45· 10 years ago
It is all welded as one piece. It probably will not need sharpening because it is a hard steel.

It comes as one piece. No assembly. The wedge is reasonably sharp - I haven't had to touch up the splitting edge at all after six months of use.
Helpful?
-
Loric1· 11 years ago
The blade is already sharp and you can use a file on it to resharpen. The unit comes all welded together no parts to attach. You will want to bolt it down to a base to support it through the holes in the base.

bates148· 11 years ago
The blade or splitting wedge is cast iron and is cast into the upright posts as one piece or part. The wedge is not removable. There is a set screw at the bottom of one of the upright posts which connects the upright posts to the bottom ring. You could run a file down to the splitting wedge to sharpen it but it would take a very long time before it would need it. This product is very strong and well built. I have split a lot of maple and oak through it and there is no wear at all.

What is diameter of top ring? What size piece can be inserted?
-
1193dungenmill· 9 years ago
Opening is 6 1/2 inch diameter.
Helpful?
-
nurikabe· 9 years ago
The inner diameter of the top ring is just a bit over 6.5 inches. Realistically you want to crack a halved or quartered average-sized log. Logs that are too big will be difficult to split and may become wedged in between the rings and the center split wedge.

-
tomtn· 9 years ago
The inside diameter of the top ring is about 6-1/2 inches (about 16.5 cm.) If you limit yourself to pieces that are no bigger than 6 inches in cross-section, you should be good. I keep a maul handy for splitting big pieces once, as needed.

Inside diameter of top and bottom ring is 6 1/2 inches; Height top to bottom are 13 inches. I won't split bigger then 3 inch dia. with my cracker. I will switch to ax. My kindle cracker is for making kindling in seconds or just splitting smaller logs. Which works great. Hope this helps you

Seasoned hickory wood can be difficult to split. We would recommend using gloves and a decently heavy hammer. The wedge can go dull over time which may increase the difficulty of the split.

How much effort in splitting with a hammer?
My 82-yr old neighbor must re-split 16" logs in order to get them into her wood stove. She's been using an ax but can't handle that any more.
-
skyviewmoose· 9 years ago
As long as you can use a hammer without problems, it's easy to split with the Kindling Cracker. I peronally use a 4 pound sledge hammer and it makes kindling faster than anything I've used in over 5 decades. You can sit in a chair while you're using it. It might take a bit more effort using a regular hammer, but would still be easy.

Make sure your wood is dry and no knots, then any hammer will work. I use a dead blow hammer which is lightweight and delivers a good whack!

I use a 3 lb sledge and it's no problem. I'm a senior lady as well. I would think a regular hammer would be difficult to use as it would require a lot of force to get the wood down onto the blade.

The smaller Kindling Cracker would have a circular mount with 2 holes. The holes are 6.9" apart. The large Kindling Cracker has 2 sides to mount it that are 5.1" apart side to side and 2.1" apart front to back with 4 holes.
