  1. does this panel come with any connecting cables between the battery and the controller ?

    1. Yes there are mini clamps that run to the battery.

    2. I used this setup last week while on vacation. The panel/charger come with clips to connect to the battery. It would be simple to make additional permanent wiring also.

  2. Does the solar panel have a built in Diode to prevent discharging at night?

    2. The solar panel comes with an 8 amp charge controller. This controller will keep the solar panel from overcharging the battery at any time, day or night.

  3. Is there a minimum operating temperature for this unit?

    1. I would not worry about temperature. Should work fine in any climate.

    2. This Ironton Folding Solar Kit does not have a minimum operating temperature rating available. This can stay outdoors under direct sunlight, rain and snow conditions (in fact this is the proper way to install it). With snow conditions the panel should be swept to avoid sunlight obstruction.

  4. Can I extend the length of the wire attached to the connector clips?

    The clips are attached to a very short wire. Can I splice some wire onto the cables so I can position the solar panel further from the battery being charged? If so, what is the maximum length of the wire - 20 ft?

    1. This solar kit shouldn't be modified (including extending the connector clip wires) in any way. Northern Tool cannot advise on or recommend modifications as they will void the warranty.

    1. This solar panel kit comes with a charge controller that prevents overcharging of 12 volt batteries.

  6. What would be a good inverter match

    1. This folding solar kit can be used with an inverter that connects directly to a 12 volt battery with wires/cables. It's necessary to size the inverter(wattage output capability) to the item you want to run off of it. If the item you're running draws more than 30 watts, it will deplete the 12 volt battery faster than this solar kit can charge it. Click the links below to view compatible inverters.

    1. The Ironton 30 Watt Folding Solar Kit is weather resistant. It can stay outdoors under direct sunlight, rain and snow conditions(in fact this is the proper way to install it). However, it cannot be immersed under water(it is not waterproof). With snow conditions, the panel should be swept to avoid sunlight obstruction. The aluminum frame helps protect the unit under high wind speeds and vibrations. It is recommended to protect it against heavy hail, covering it temporarily in some way(plywood, etc.) after unplugging it.

  8. Do I need to disconnect this solar kit to the battery when I charge with gas generator.

    1. On this Ironton Folding Solar Kit it is best to disconnect the panel before charging the battery with an alternate source. If the panel is not disconnected when charging from an alternate source it could cause damage to the panel itself.

  9. Can two or more of these panels be connected to create a 60W or 90W solar array?

    1. The Ironton Folding Solar Kit comes with an 8amp charge controller that will handle up to 120 watts of solar power. This kit is designed as a stand-alone portable application. Connecting two or more kits together may require creating a wiring harness using 12 volt quick connect plugs.
