  1. I have an HWDV181BDVP propane heater. I have a 40# propane tank with no regulator. The heater has a regulator. Do I need a regulator on the tank?

    1. Yes, you will need a regulator. Moreover, most gas suppliers will require the use of a two stage regulator, and a minimum 100lb. tank for a heater of this size.

    2. you need to have a regulator on the tank! There is a regulator that you can attach 2 tanks to and it will automatically switch to the full tank when the other one is empty

  4. Can this heater be connected to a thermostat at all?

    1. The heater cannot be connected to a wired thermostat. There is a blub thermostat within the heater.

    1. No. You, or your gas supplier or installer, will have to provide those external components.

  6. How do you mount the unit to a wall?

    1. Follow the instructions and template. Couldn't be easier. If you have trouble have a pro install it. Better safe than sorry.

    2. This unit comes with a mounting template and the hardware needed for mounting. There is a diagram and instructions and how to do so listed in the product manual. You can find this manual on the website listed under "Content Links."

  7. Will this heater work in a bedroom?

    1. Absolutely, though you really don't need one that's this big (18,000 BTU). A 10K unit will work nicely. We're heating a large living room, dining room and kitchen with ours.
      Because it's a Direct Vent unit it will draw combustion air from the outside and vent the gases back outside, so there's virtually NO chance of carbon monoxide problems in the bedroom.

    2. The only requirements for installation from the manufacturer, are that this heater needs to be mounted on an outside wall, and that you maintain the recommended clearances to adjacent combustible construction. It is also recommended that a qualified service person install this heater, and that installation must conform to local codes, or in the absence of local codes, installation must conform to the National Fuel Gas Code, ANSI Z223.1.

  8. Can this heater be installed on a wood wall or does it need to be mounted on something non flammable?

    1. For service access you need to mount this unit on an outside wall at least 4 inches above the floor. Ours is mounted on a wood-paneled wall.
      There should be no problem mounting it on a wood wall.

  10. House Warmmer Propane Heater

    Can 18,000 BTU heater #174984 be purchased without the blower? We do not have electricity in our hunting shack. Model # HWDV181BDVP

    1. This 18,000 BTU unit comes with the blower, but the heater will operate just fine without it. You say "hunting shack". If your camp or shack is fairly small, you might well heat it with the smaller Housewarmer unit sold by Northern. That heater has no blower as standard equipment. I heat a 10 X 20 foot camp with R-11 wall insulation, R-19 ceiling insulation, and R-10 foamboard in the floor, right through a Maine winter with that little 8000 BTU Housewarmer.

    2. The heater is available with out the blower but Northern Tool does not carry it. Call Empire Comfort Systems for information on where to purchase it. The non-blower's model number is HWDV181DV. The manufacturer states that model HWDV181BDVP will perform as normal without the blower plugged in.
