      All Honda self-propelled mowers are rear-wheel drive. This provides a best traction and control in many types of turf conditions, and is much easier to steer, especially up a grade, than front-wheel drive.

  2. Can you turn off the self propel and just push?

    1. Yes, it isn't a constant propel. It's more of a throttle type control

    3. Yes, very easy to do that. I switch off the self-propel a lot as I have a patch that is sloped that cannot be done following contours, I have to go up and down.

    4. You can push it, but you will find the drive system is easy to use. You simply apply your thumb(S) on the lever and it goes, there are also adjustments you can make for speed. If you do not press the lever it will push though.

    5. Releasing the smart drive control will disengage the rear wheels so you can push the mower around trees and other obstacles.

  3. Just ordered this lawnmower, but hasn't been delivered yet. Seems like you have to push down on the Smart Drive lever

    to control the speed. Do you constantly have to be pushing with youtr thumb? Doesn't your thumb get tired after a while.

    1. Yes you do have to constantly hold the lever down but it doesn't cause thumb fatigue whatsoever. Very easy system to use.

    2. The handles are designed to be held down with your hand. You can adjust the Smart Drive to a position that works best for you.

    3. Yes, have to push down, it is adjustable, I use the palm of my hands instead of my thumbs.

    4. I thought the smart drive lever might drive me crazy....but it's not an issue at all. It's proven to be more comfortable than holding a bar and releasing the bar when making turns like I had to do with a Craftsman Briggs and Straton lawnmower I just retired. It takes about 45min to mow my yard and it's not an issue at all!

    5. You do need to constantly push down on the smart drive lever with your thumb to control your speed. It is very easy to push down on so fatigue should not be a factor.

  4. One key fact that has been omitted is whether this is a 2 or 4 cycle engine. I must have 2 cycle due to hilly terrain.

    4. This has a 4 cycle engine. The engine has a special oil pump that allows the engine to be safely operated at any position.

    5. Actually, the engine on the Honda FG110 has a special oil pump that means the engine can be safely operated at any position, what Honda calls "360-degree inclinable" engine. The oil is churned into a mist that is pumped to all vital parts of the engine, regardless of the position. So it is safe to operate the Honda FG110 on a sloped surface. -Robert@honda

  5. Can you mow without the bag or in the mulch mode?

    Can the Honda Self-Propelled Mower — 160cc Honda GCV Engine, 21in. Deck, Model# HRR216K9VKA be used without the bag? In other words can you just cut the grass without mulching and let the clippings fall on the ground instead of going in the bag? I have the HRX217HYA model and you can just remove the bag and it discharges the grass.

    1. Yes. You can keep it on the BAG mode and clippings will come to the back of the mower. There is some separation between the back cover and the mower that will allow clippings to fall in the back of the mower area. No side discharge. I will say this though, the blades cut the grass so finely due to dual blades, so you won't have a ton of clippings to fall in that area anyway...

    2. You have a two options knob, mulch or bag. I use mulch without the bag attached to the machine. Best mulching I've seen ever.

      Yes, you may remove the grass bag and either mulch or rear-discharge the clippings. Some of the photos on this site are not up to date, but others are, and you can see the Clip Director control (green knob) on the mower deck.

      When set to MULCH, the deck is sealed off, and clipping get circulated and re-cut by the blades until a fine mulch is created, then dispersed back to the lawn. When set the BAG, a shutter opens and the clippings will be blown into the grass bag, or, if the bag is removed, out the rear and then directed down to the lawn.   7. Rear drive

    can this be turned off?

    1. You can self push the mower with the blade running. The thumb controls that engage the self propulsion can be used from 0 to 4mph. So, if you want to take it slow, it's very easy. It's a gradual throttle that is constantly led by your thumbs. Very user friendly. My wife loves it as much as I do.

    160cc means nothing to me i need horsepower rating at least has to be 6 horse power
