Yes, the planting depth very easy to set. You just park the planter on your flat driveway, patio or garage floor. Stick a board under each wheel that is the same thickness as your desired planting depth while the tines (planting furrows) are resting on the ground. (I used a 2X4 that was actually 1.5 inches thick.) Then you basically just use a socket driver to turn a bolt on each wheel arm that will maintain the wheel/tine distance. The manual does a better job of explaining. It is 5 minute job the first time, then a two minute job when you see how easy it is.

You can adjust the depth two ways. One by raising the the opening plows or by raising the tongue.

The depth on the seeder is adjustable. There are bolts on the wheels that you move to a different slot to change the depth.

no till? fingers crossed!
Can this be used in a no till application? It's hard to tell by the picture but it does not look heavy enough to drive through uncultivated soil.
-
IllinoisHobbyFarmer· 6 years ago
The field needs to be tilled just right. If you have large clumps of dirt, clumps of grass/turf, or corn stover, all the debris will get caught under the planter.

What is the in-row spacing distance for this unit?
-
IllinoisHobbyFarmer· 6 years ago
You can move the planter boxes very easily to make whatever row spacing you want. However, there is an engagement bar in the middle of the planter that needs to be able to move freely. You can't crowd the two planter boxes too close to that engagement bar. I was planning to have 15 inch rows for my soybeans but I had to settle for 16 1/2 inch rows because if I moved the planter boxes any closer to each other, they would block the engagement bar. (The "engagement bar" is used to lower the unit when you are ready to plant, and raise the unit when you want to tow it to/from the field.) Something else to think about: There is not a good way to adjust the seeding rate. Each box basically drops a seed every for inches. If your rows are two close together, you will end up using too much seed per acre.

To plant you lower the planters using the L shaped lever. To stop planting you must raise the planter using the L shaped lever and lock it in place.

How do you keep brush from building up on the furrow?
I have a vineyard and the ground is covered with mulch consisting of chopped up vines and other plant material (the ground is not disked)
-
IllinoisHobbyFarmer· 6 years ago
This is probably not the planter for you. I planted one field today that went perfectly because the field was tilled well and there was no debris. But the other fields were a nightmare because the corn stover, and/or clumps of grass/turf kept accumulating under the planter.

The seeder will work best with ground that is prepared for planting. The unit does not provide a way to keep excessive brush from build up.
