thermostat
does the thermostat have temperture settings so it will cycle on and off and maintain a certain temp

The thermostat is a simple knob with numbers from 0 to 6. It just turns on again when it cools down enough. We find it cools a bit too much before it turns on.

-
Impaler· 16 years ago
No.
Full 'left' is the 'OFF' position. As you turn the knob a little to the right you will feel some resistance then hear an electric relay 'click' - the heater is now 'ON' with the thermostat in the lowest setting. As you continue to turn the knob to the right this will raise the thermostat temperature but there are no calibration marks. I used a marking pen to set my own 'range'.

Preventec· 16 years ago
Yes, it does have a thermostat. IT is a round knob
that you turn to select a range between low to hot
where ever you want it.Helpful?

This does have a 2 pole thermostat, with one heat setting. It has a blower as well.

What is the minimum thickness of the wall to accept this unit.
I see you give the overall depth but I need to know what is the depth of the part that is behind the wall.
-
ToastyInBoise· 15 years ago
Will easily mount into a wall having 2x4 studs leaving about 1/2" protruding from wall surface. Wiring is through sides of unit, so no space behind the unit is required.

The instructions say the back box is 3 13/16" thick, 19" tall and 15 5/32" wide. The cover is surface mount and sticks out about 1.5". I had no problem putting it in a standard 2 x 4 stud wall.

My garage is studded with 2x4's (3 1/2" deep) and the heater fit with no problems

ProductExpert19· 16 years ago
The depth of the recessed back box is 3 3/4". You should place the back box into wall opening flush with the finished wall surface on bottom and sides of box. (Top flange of back box should protrude approximately 1/2" from finished wall surface). Do not install the back box closer than 8 inches from floor or adjacent wall, or closer than 36" to the ceiling.

What size conductor is neccessary?
Is 12 big enough?
-
AaronB· 14 years ago
4000W hardwired heater requires 10AWG wire. This is because it is considered a continuous load under the NEC (National Electric Code). Circuits must be sized at 125% of the continuous load.
4000W/240V = 16.7A. 16.7A * 125% = 20.9A. The maximum allowed for 12AWG is 20A. Therefore you must step up to 10AWG wire (10/2 if using Romex or other NM cable).
This heater requires a 25A breaker over 10AWG wire.
Obviously consult with a licensed electrician and local code authorities as well.

ToastyInBoise· 15 years ago
Check with local electrical codes, but I don't think 12g is enough. I usually overdo it and used 6AWG.

Ghimmy51· 16 years ago
The instructions state 10-2 wire.

ProductExpert7· 16 years ago
The size conductor is going to be determined by the National Electrical Code requirements in your state. A specific size is not mentioned.

Does it need a 2 or 3 conductor wire?
-
Ghimmy51· 14 years ago
A ground wire is needed, so the answer is 3.
Helpful?
-
ToastyInBoise· 15 years ago
Three conductor (two hot, one common) if panel is grounded.
Helpful?
-
ProductExpert19· 16 years ago
You can use either, but if you are using a two conductor with a ground (one black and one white wire) place a piece of black electrical tape around the end of the insulation of the white wire. This will show that this wire is hot and not a neutral. Also, all wiring must be in accordance with national and local electrical codes.

Can I use with an external thermostat?
I understand that the fan delay will not work, since power will be cut off. Is that a problem? Will the unit overheat if fan is not run after power off?
-
ProductExpert19· 12 years ago
It is not recommended to operate the heater other than the way it was designed.
Helpful?
-
National Accounts· 12 years ago
The FZL4004 wall heater comes from the factory with a built in thermostat and is ETL listed in that manner. You are correct that if you put an in-line, line voltage thermostat to operate this unit, the fan delay will not operate. This will cause internal problems with the heater and cause the unit to trip on the safety limit switch. This will also decrease the life expectancy of the component parts of the heater. It is not recommended to operate the heater other than as it was designed to operate.

Horizontal installation?
We have a low ceiling and an easy installation could be done in the ceiling. See any problems?
-
AaronB· 12 years ago
No, that would be very dangerous. It would cause heat to build up and possibly start a fire. The heater is designed for vertical wall installation only, and requires a large distance between it and the ceiling above.
If you want to purchase a heater for a ceiling there are ones designed specifically for that purpose.

This Fahrenheat Commercial Wall Heater is designed to be installed in a wall. Installing in a ceiling may prevent the heater from working correctly and should not be attempted.

What is the DB rating on the fan?
-
Ghimmy51· 14 years ago
Do you have a Db meter? I don't. I can tell you after a winter with it that I wish I hadn't mounted it in so solidly. The fan itself isn't loud, but the wall I mounted it in acts like a sound board and I get tired of turning up the tv when it cycles on. This summer I'll be taking it out to put the enclosure on some rubber grommets or something.
If your mounting location is solid as a rock it won't matter. Mine isn't, however, compared to oil it saved me the cost of the heater in the first 2 months and I got another for a different location for next winter.Helpful?

How many square feet does it heat?

Easily heats a 200sq ft. garage. Would think nothing of using it for twice the space with a ceiling fan or something else to move the air around.

With a BTU rating of 13,650 this should heat 525 square feet.
