Information on the contents of the 2X4 Anysize Workbench Kit # 90164.
For the main bench, the screws to attach the legs to the 2X4s are included. Also attached to the legs on the outside are two small plastic vise-like holders; and 4 other plastic type holders that tools could be hung on, icluded with the mounting hardware. Finally, there are six plastic holders for 2X4s to make three upper shelves from 2X4s that are fastened to the top of the main bench (you can see them on the bench image if you look close). The screws for them are also part of the package. Since you determine the size of the bench/shelves based on the size of the 2X4s you are using, you can control how big you want to build.Helpful?

Feet on table legs?
Do the legs of the table have "feet" for leveling?
Thanks.
-
Mike71· 9 years ago
No.
Helpful?
-
Papasobe· 11 years ago
No it does not come with leveling feet. But like Joe007 said you can use hardware from a hardware store. Level feet with Tee nuts. Put a 3" piece of 2x4 on the inside bottom. Bolt or wood screw the block of the wood to the leg. Then drill a hole through the bottom of the leg and the wood, insert the Tee nut and then screw in the leveling feet.

can I use anything for a top
Most examples I see appear to be CDX or plywood. Can I use like a butcher block type top or something thicker than standard plywood, or will this thickness throw off 2x4 placement, etc...
-
Mike71· 9 years ago
Yes, but 1/2" plywood fits flush with the support legs and thing else would protrude above.
Helpful?
-
Anonymous· 13 years ago
yes you can.. I used the remaining 3/4 plywood, but im feeling how sturdy it was I and how much i've already put on the shelf shows no bowing of 32''s tall 2x4s
Helpful?
-
ETAS· 13 years ago
I just built mine this past weekend and I don't see how the thickness would effect anything.
Helpful?
-
JimH1014· 14 years ago
You can use any material you desire. You actually mount the top to the 2x4 supports that are connected to the resin legs. In my case I used 2x10's so they extended up past the top of the resin legs and were level to mount the plywood to that. Good luck. You will like this unit.
Helpful?
-
shpeters· 14 years ago
you could use something thicker, shouldnt throw anything off,It would go above the top of the legs but wouldnt make any difference as far a 2x4 placement
Helpful?
-
RKendall· 14 years ago
You can certainly use the butcher block. There will however be a protrusion above the 2x4 kit legs braces, but it won't have anything to do with the stability. I use 3/4 ply (I have 2) and both tables are very solid. If you have surplus butcher block, then use that, but I would not spend the money unless you have a specific need.
Helpful?
-
ProductExpert6· 14 years ago
As long as you use the 2 x 4 for the framing you should be able to use whatever you want for the shelving. A thicker shelf would obviously give you less room between the shelves.

Is there away to add wheels to the bench, so I could move it around.
-
Mike71· 9 years ago
Not as it comes in the box, you could get creative and put a brace inside the 2x4 frame and mount casters there.
Helpful?
-
ETAS· 13 years ago
You could probably add some casters to the bottom 2x4's but they'd have to be pretty tall. Don't think you could get them in the corners though.
Helpful?
-
JimH1014· 14 years ago
You could add a plywood bottom and mount casters to that very easily.
Helpful?
-
OffGrid2009· 15 years ago
Previous answers are clear, it is do-able. If you do it, make sure you get casters with foot-locks on at least two of the legs, you don't want the bench moving when you are working on it. Also be aware, most work benches run from 33" to 36" high. This bench is already at the upper (normal) limit, and casters would add another 2-to-4 inches (depending on the wheel size). That might make it too high for comfortable work.
Helpful?
-
gunsup· 15 years ago
Yes, casters could be installed at the corner legs to make the beanch rollable
Helpful?
-
OCoffROADER· 15 years ago
the bottom of each leg is a corner of plastic. If I wanted to add wheels, I would mount a 4x4 chunk to make the leg base square, then I would mount a heavy duty caster. I think this could be done easily and cheaply.

Would the stability of the bench be greatly diminished if I did not build the middle shelf?
-
Mike71· 9 years ago
No it's not needed, but the assembly instructions show a 2x4 placed diagonally under the plywood top, I prefer cross pieces and more of them. The plastic uprights are substantial and a single top piece is stable.
Helpful?
-
ETAS· 13 years ago
I built mine without it. The only thing that's missing as far as stability is concerned is one 2x4. I still put 2x4's across the back and sides but not the front. Doesn't seem to effect anything.

Helpful?
-
OCoffROADER· 15 years ago
I left the middle shelf out. I wanted to store some bigger tools like my table saw underneath. I did mount the 2X4 to the sides and the back which would have supported the middle shelf; I figured this was needed for stability. In this configuration the bench very stable. I have used it daily for about 2-3 months.
Helpful?
-
OffGrid2009· 15 years ago
The staff answer is correct, but it doesn't really answer your question. The middle deck adds something to the lateral stability of the table, so it won't wiggle so much side to side, front to back. But if you really want to stabilize the bench, with or without the middle deck, get 1/4 in CDX plywood and fasten it to the 2x4's on the back and sides with several 1 in wood screws. Cut out the corners to get around the leg supports, and cover the entire openings. This gives you a rock-solid bench. I also add overlapping front doors made of masonite on my benches, sliding in cheap plastic channels, which almost eliminates dust getting on the tools and supplies on the sub-decks (I tack strips of wood on both sides of the lower channels to keep them from being destroyed by my clumsiness in taking out or putting away my tools).

My question was answered to a point, but 4x8 is very clear and already known.
Front to back what is the ideal working measurement? It seems like a 4 ft depth is too deep.
-
Mike71· 9 years ago
I made my work bench 30-1/2" work surface because I already had a cut piece of plywood and that is a comfortable width to reach to the other side, and the
length is 8'. Working height it 35.250" using 1/2" plywood.Helpful?

ETAS· 13 years ago
I built mine 2' deep and it works great for me.
Helpful?
-
JimH1014· 14 years ago
It is unless you are using it to be able to walk around. 2'5" would be ideal, I'm a shorter guy and built mine 3' deep. If I were to build it again I'd go 2'5" deep - as it is hard to reach the shelving unit and some items on my pegboard back. I do have plenty of work space however including a vice and grinder on each corner.

-
Geowhiziker· 16 years ago
The ideal front to back measurement is whatever best suits your needs. I made my bench 4'x8' to fit a standard sheet of plywood and that provided me with enough work surface for my needs. When I build my next bench for use as a reloading bench, it will be considerably narrower. Probably on the order of 2 to 2 1/2'.
