How to Pick a Generator Cord

When it comes to producing power, generators understandably get all the attention. As a result, one key accessory often gets overlooked: the generator cord. The generator cord is essential for delivering the electricity created by the generator to tools, appliances, electronics, medical equipment and other vital electrical accessories. Standard household extension cords are often used and are available in light-, medium- and heavy-duty designs. These cords can indeed work for operating lower amp drawing tools or appliances, such as lights and fans. They do, however, have limitations and are not suited for many situations. If using a standard household extension cord, make sure it is outdoor-rated and is capable of handling the required amperage for your needs.

AMPS AND VOLTS

When shopping for a generator cord, a quick scan of the available options shows there are many sizes and types available. Choosing the right one may seem like a complicated task but it actually is fairly straightforward and it all begins with your generator. If you have questions, check the owner’s manual for your generator for specific guidelines. Finding the right generator cord is about more than choosing a length. It’s mainly about amps. To find the right cord for your generator, choose a cord that matches the highest amperage outlet on your generator. For example, if the highest power outlet on your generator is a 30 Amp outlet, choose a 30 Amp cord. Of course, voltage also factors into selecting a cord. Generators often feature both 120 Volt and 120/240 Volt outlets. While 120 Volts is sufficient for smaller tools and handheld appliances, many larger appliances, such as ovens and dryers, require higher voltage to operate. This would require a cord capable of handling higher voltage.

PICKING YOUR PLUG, LENGTH + GAUGE

There are several plug designs available, including straight blade, 3-prong, 4-prong and Twist-Lock. 30 Amp plugs are available in either 3-prong or 4-prong styles. The difference being how many volts it can handle. A 30 Amp, 3-prong plug handles 120 Volts whereas 30 Amp 4-prong plug carries 120 or 240 Volts. Twist-Lock plugs are another option usually used in applications where a secure connection is critical. The name explains how they work ─ plug them into the outlet and twist to lock the cord in place. Cords need to be long enough to provide a safe distance (at least 20ft.) between the generator and people or homes to prevent the health risks associated with inhaling carbon monoxide fumes. Keep in mind, longer cords mean more electrical resistance, which means less power is delivered to whatever you’re running. Just as cord length has an effect on the amount of power delivered, so does wire thickness, which is indicated as gauge size (AWG). The smaller the gauge size, the thicker the wire and the more amps it can handle. For example, an 8-ga. wire is thicker than a 10-ga. wire and can deliver more power. If in doubt, bump up to a thicker gauge size. When shopping for a generator cord, consider the gauge size along with the length to make the best selection. Remember to use the shortest cord that meets your needs but also ensures safe generator operation.
