Tips for achieving precision when using a tap and die set. Make sure you’ve got the correct tap and die for the material and threading size that you’re working with. Keep the threads on the bolt or stud clean. This’ll help to prevent chips and debris from messing with the process. Use oil or some other lubricant to reduce friction, heat, and wear. It’ll extend the life of the tap and die. Start slow, gradually pick up speed and pressure as the tap cuts into the material. Once and awhile, back the tap out and remove any chips, periodically clean the tap and die to prevent chips and debris from making your cuts less accurate.
