If you’re looking for tap and die sets, you’ve come to the right place. This lineup includes both metric and standard sizes and combination metric/standard sets. You’ll find multi-piece die sets ranging anywhere from 3 pcs.–to 35 pcs. and tap sets ranging anywhere from 3 pcs.–to 70 pcs. Combination tap and die sets range from 5 pcs.–to 131 pcs. Many of the tap and die sets here are available for ordering online and picking up in a Northern Tool store near you.
Tips for achieving precision when using a tap and die set. Make sure you’ve got the correct tap and die for the material and threading size that you’re working with. Keep the threads on the bolt or stud clean. This’ll help to prevent chips and debris from messing with the process. Use oil or some other lubricant to reduce friction, heat, and wear. It’ll extend the life of the tap and die. Start slow, gradually pick up speed and pressure as the tap cuts into the material. Once and awhile, back the tap out and remove any chips, periodically clean the tap and die to prevent chips and debris from making your cuts less accurate. Use a tap guide or T-handled wrench for better control and accuracy. Keep the tap and die at 90 degrees to the workpiece to help avoid creating angled or cross-threaded holes. Precision tapping requires patience. A cool head and a steady hand. Take your time and be careful to avoid over-tightening the tap, which can cause it to break or produce an over-sized hole. Easy does it, practice makes perfect, wash your hands, and other good advice.
