Salt + Ice Melt
Liquid de-icers are not as highly sought-after as the granular form but have grown in popularity for road maintenance applications because they can be applied proactively as an anti-icer. Comparatively, liquid ice melt is faster acting and longer lasting with the right weather conditions. It begins working immediately upon contacting ice and snow and embeds itself into a surface allowing it to work for several days when winter weather is mild. It also sticks better to the surfaces on which it’s applied, however, this can also be a disadvantage as it can sometimes make sloped surfaces more slippery. Dilution of liquid ice melt reduces its effectiveness, and it should not be used if there’s a chance of rain falling during or soon after application. Additionally, it cannot compete with granular de-icer when it comes to melting thick ice and snowpack.
Some tips for using granular or liquid ice melt products include:
- For best results, clear as much snow and ice accumulation as possible prior to applying the de-icers.
- Make a habit of wearing gloves during application, as some ice melt products can irritate skin.
- Some ice melt products are corrosive and may damage concrete, wood, and vegetation. If treating areas with these materials, stick with calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, or calcium magnesium acetate de-icing formulas. Several de-icing formulas are harmful to pets. If treating areas frequented by pets, use only ice melt formulas specifically labeled as pet-safe.
Bare Ground makes the products you need to stay safe in the icy conditions of winter. Melt snow and ice quickly with options that are far less corrosive than standard rock salt. Environmentally-friendly formulas, nontoxic to pets and livestock, harmless for use around lawns and plants and are water soluble, non-staining for easy cleanup. Make your walkways and roadways safe for all users, all winter long.
