Loading Dock Safety Railing + Guardrails
Safety railings and guardrail bases, brackets, bumpers, end caps, end guards, mounting brackets, post brackets and more. Adjustable units in lengths up to 110ft. with self-closing gates to coordinate with existing guardrails. These gate sets can be mounted at right angles, in-line and opening left or right swing.
A safety gate is needed in facilities with mezzanine stairs or other stair systems to comply with OSHA and ANSI requirements. The ladder guard safety systems are OSHA-compliant with fall protection for permanent ladder installations. Most safety rails here are made of heavy-duty welded steel, have powder-coated, safety yellow finish to provide visibility and corrosion resistance.

Are there safety regulations that apply to loading dock guardrails?
Safety barriers are required by OSHA standard 29 CFR 1210.28 (b) (1) (i) if a loading dock creates a drop of four or more feet. Since most flatbeds, semitrailers and straight trucks feature bed heights that align with 48in. platforms, most dock platforms need safety barriers. Refrigerator trucks typically feature 50in.–60in. beds, so they invariably require loading docks high enough to require safety barriers. Chains can be used as a safety barrier; however, bars are often recommended. In this case, guardrails are the perfect solution. Guardrail systems are required by OSHA to withstand 200 lbs. of force within 2in. from the top, and in any direction and at any point along the edge. With 200 lbs. of force in effect, the top of the guardrail cannot tip downward to less than 39in. above the work platform.
What are the height requirements for loading dock guardrails to comply with OSHA?
Yes. Guardrail height must be 42in. (107 cm) plus or minus 3in. (8 cm) above the walk/work surface they are guarding.
Can loading dock guardrails or safety railings be retrofitted onto an existing dock?
The short answer is yes. There are accessories on the market designed to help retrofit loading dock railings onto existing docks. Most critical to remember is that the retrofitted safety railings must meet all OSHA requirements in their new location.
