Bosch Reciprocating Saws

Reciprocating Saws

RECIPROCATING SAWS The reciprocating saw is a convenient and versatile tool used for numerous applications including plumbing, demolition, remodeling, electrical, and even tree pruning! Northern Tool + Equipment is proud to offer reciprocating saws from trustworthy brands Milwaukee, Dewalt, and Bosch. As you shop the selection, there are several features to keep in mind:

Corded vs. Cordless

The decision between a corded or cordless model is dependent on the amount of movement your task or project requires. Cordless reciprocating saws allow greater maneuverability and convenience around a jobsite. If you were to use this tool for tree pruning, a cordless model is best suited. For more stationary and time-consuming projects, however, a corded reciprocating saw is recommended as it will provide the most consistent power. Additionally, corded models are typically lighter weight than the cordless battery-powered saws.

Straight vs. Orbital

These categories of reciprocating saws are named after the movement of the blade. A straight reciprocating saw blade moves forward and backward and performs a clean, controlled cut which is desirable for applications such as cutting metal or PVC. Orbital reciprocating saws move in a more elliptical shape which cuts material faster and more aggressively. If you want the best of both worlds – it is possible! There are several models of saws on the market with the ability to switching between straight and orbital cutting.

Speed + Stroke Length

Once you have determined which power source and cut category you desire for your reciprocating saw, we suggest focusing your attention on speed and stroke length. The speed, or stroke frequency, of a reciprocating saw is measured in maximum strokes per minute (SPM). The average reciprocating saw speed lies near 3,000 SPM. You will find that nearly all models in Northern’s selection lie between 2,800-3,000 SPM. If you need a tool with higher speeds, consider pneumatic models manufactured for heavy-duty applications. Stroke length can affect the efficiency of your tool: longer stroke length = more material cut with each pass of the blade. In addition, a tool with longer stroke lengths also vibrates less making it more comfortable for users to operate.

After determining which reciprocating saw brand and model is best suited for your needs the fun part begins! Your new tool can be outfitted with wood, metal, pruning, or multi-material blades to tackle any variety of cutting tasks your home or jobsite needs doing. As always, make sure to wear the appropriate PPE while operating your saw including gloves as well as eye and ear protection.
