What do the different hitch classes and ratings mean?
Trailer hitch receivers are available in class sizes from 1 to 5.
Class 1 Hitches: Fit 1-1/4-inch receiver tube. Max. towing capacity of 2,000lbs. Designed for smaller sized passenger vehicles like sedans and small vans.
Class 2 Hitches: Fit 1-1/4-inch receiver tube. Max. towing capacity of 3,500lbs. Designed for smaller sized passenger vehicles like sedans and small vans.
Class 3 Hitches: Fit 2-inch receiver tube. Max. towing capacity of up to 8,000lbs. Designed for most SUVs, Crossover vehicles, and quarter-ton, half-ton and ¾-ton pick-up trucks.
Class 4 Hitches: Fit 2-inch receiver tube. Max. towing capacity of up to 10,000lbs. Designed for most SUVs, Crossover vehicles, and quarter-ton, half-ton and ¾-ton pick-up trucks.
Class 5 Hitches: Fit 2-1/2-inch or 3-inch receiver tube. Highest weight rated—max. towing capacity of 18,500lbs. to 21,000lbs. depending on receiver size. Designed for heavy-duty or extremely heavy-duty trucks.
How do I know if my vehicle is compatible with a trailer hitch receiver model?
First, check to make sure the shaft of the hitch will fit inside the receiver hitch on your vehicle. Next, check the manufacturer’s tow capacity rating on your vehicle, as well as the weight rating on the hitch to ensure they are compatible.
