High-Speed Trailer Tires
Of the two types, radial high speed trailer tires + wheels tend to last longer. This is primarily due to their ability to dissipate heat more efficiently. Radial tires are manufactured with belts that run 90 degrees or perpendicular to the tread pattern. This type of tire is also known for its low rolling resistance which offers the benefit of higher fuel efficiency. They are also resistant to developing flat spots when left stationary for prolonged periods of time. This feature alone makes radial tires favorable for travel trailers used seasonally. Bias ply tires are designed and constructed with cross-hatched (30-45 degree) belts which produces more rigid sidewalls. This feature reduces trailer sway and enhances stability when the trailer is fully loaded.
When purchasing trailer tires, you must ensure all tires combined meet the GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating) of the trailer. GVWR includes both the weight of the trailer alone as well as its maximum load capacity. To calculate the tire load capacity needed to support your trailer, divide GVWR by the number of tires. For example, a trailer with 10,000-pound GVWR needs either two tires with at least 5,000-pound load capacity or four tires with at least 2,500-pound load capacity. We recommend giving yourself a bit of insurance by purchasing tires that exceed your trailer’s GVWR. The final item to consider is the tire’s speed rating. This measurement, alongside load capacity, is displayed on the tire’s sidewall. Only purchase tires rated to meet the speed at which you plan to transport the trailer on the highway.
