Snow Plow Cutting Edges

Snowplow cutting edges are mounted along the bottom edge of the snowplow blade and wings to ensure that packed snow and ice are properly scraped from the roadway or surface being cleared of snow. Cutting edges also play a significant role in protecting the blade itself from damage. The snowplow cutting edges carried by Northern Tool + Equipment come in a variety of lengths and almost every piece comes pre-drilled with mounting holes. Snowplow cutting edges are manufactured from several materials: steel, polyurethane, or rubber. Each material type has benefits and drawbacks that should be carefully considered prior to purchasing.

Steel cutting edges provide the best scrape. However, it is extremely loud, and a poor choice for sensitive surfaces such as cement and decorative pavers. Steel edges damage these surfaces, resulting in scratches that become visible once the seasons change. Rubber cutting edges are the softest and most cost-effective of all snowplow edge materials. Snowplow edges made of rubber are the safest to use on materials prone to damage. Rubber also makes snow plowing much quieter, making it a favored choice for plowing residential areas. Polyurethane is often considered the best of both worlds. Poly cutting edges are rigid like steel but flexible like rubber. This gives plows the ability to provide a good scrape, even on sensitive surfaces and gravel. For these reasons, polyurethane snowplow cutting edges are growing in popularity, especially among municipalities. The only drawback to this material type is cost. It is the most expensive snowplow cutting edge material on the market.

The interval at which snowplow cutting edges should be replaced is entirely dependent on the edge’s material, the grade of surfaces being cleared, and the amount of time the plow is in use. However, a good rule of thumb is to check the cutting edge frequently so that it can be replaced prior to the plow blade becoming exposed.
