Too much pump?,

"This is a great pump so far, but might be a little too big for what I needed. It seems like the minimum amount I can run thru the pump is about 1.2gpm at 40psi without pump cycling. Running just a handheld wand causes the pump to cycle rapidly. I have 4 blue nozzles covering about 128" of area. Changing to the red nozzles provides some margin to the pump cycling by upping the flow rate (~1.6gpm at 40psi). Adding additional volume to the circuit helps dampen the pulsations, reducing or eliminating the cycling. Running 3-4 yellow or green nozzles is not an option because of pump cycling (would have to add nozzles to get the flow rate up above 1.2gpm). I probably could have gotten by w/ the 1gpm model (8009-541-236). I used about 154 gallons of water and 2.25 gallons (~1.5% mixture) of 2,4-D to kill weeds on a ~3 acre lawn."

"My Sprayer came with this type of pump and it went bad right away. Warranty wouldn't cover it and when I bought a new one, It lasted one spraying before doing the same."

Shurflo 12v pump,

"I purchased this pump to mount on a Northstar 26 gallon tank. I use it to water trees on a 5 acre plot. The pump works great. Self primes and gets the job done. No need for an electrical on off switch as the pump only turns on when the water valve is open. The tank and pump sit in a tow behind trailor for my ride around mower. Been using now for over a month and am very satisfied with the purchase.

I would highly recomend this pump and tank to anyone."

"I bought one of these pumps as a replacement for my tow-behind lawn sprayer. The original one was somehow damaged by a faulty wiring installed by the previous owner.

This pump has, since it's installation, been runing like a champ! It has probably logged over 100 hours of use since the swap-out and has never once failed to deliver the goods. I know when I drag out my sprayer I can count on this pump to perform over and over again. The pump construction is rock solid and of very high quality. Engineering design is excellant. I should know, I'm a Professional Engineer!

Even if it costs more than the competitor's pump, it is money well spent....you get what you pay for!!!!

I highly recommend this pump to anyone thinking of buying one of these pumps, and have never regretted buying it!!!"

what does on demand mean?

I think 'on demand' and 'bypass' are 2 different things. "On demand' means the pump shuts off once the shutoff pressure is reached, like 80-90psi on the model listed (I have this pump). Once the pressure drops, by like opening a valve or a handheld wand, the pump turns on and begins to flow liquid at a reduced pressure, which is set by the flow area (flowing thru a series of nozzles or open flow) and the pressure setting of the pump. Mine flows at about 40psi with 4 blue or red nozzles (1.2-1.6gpm). "Bypass" refers to a internal circuit inside the pump that will allow the pump to not cycle rapidly on and off at low flow rates. The pump I have (same one you are questioning) will cycle rapidly if I have the flow rate below 1.2gpm (like using 4 green nozzles or 4 yellow nozzles). The bypass recirculates some flow from the discharge of the pump back to the inlet of the pump to keep the flow rate high enough to avoid cycling. I don't believe this pump is a bypass model.

On demand means that the pump has a pressure switch on it. If your sprayer is off (not spraying) the pump will continue to run until a set pressure is achieved. On this pump it is 60 lbs. At that pressure, the pump will turn off. There will be 60 lbs of pressure in the output hose to your sprayer handle. When you open the spray valve, the pump will turn on. This saves wear and tear on the pump.

This pump features an on demand switch that automatically turns the pump on and off as flow is required (pulling the spray trigger). The bypass feature circulates the water in the pump until demand is required.
