what does on demand mean?

Answers

On demand means that the pump has a pressure switch on it. If your sprayer is off (not spraying) the pump will continue to run until a set pressure is achieved. On this pump it is 60 lbs. At that pressure, the pump will turn off. There will be 60 lbs of pressure in the output hose to your sprayer handle. When you open the spray valve, the pump will turn on. This saves wear and tear on the pump.

This pump features an on demand switch that automatically turns the pump on and off as flow is required (pulling the spray trigger). The bypass feature circulates the water in the pump until demand is required.

I think 'on demand' and 'bypass' are 2 different things. "On demand' means the pump shuts off once the shutoff pressure is reached, like 80-90psi on the model listed (I have this pump). Once the pressure drops, by like opening a valve or a handheld wand, the pump turns on and begins to flow liquid at a reduced pressure, which is set by the flow area (flowing thru a series of nozzles or open flow) and the pressure setting of the pump. Mine flows at about 40psi with 4 blue or red nozzles (1.2-1.6gpm). "Bypass" refers to a internal circuit inside the pump that will allow the pump to not cycle rapidly on and off at low flow rates. The pump I have (same one you are questioning) will cycle rapidly if I have the flow rate below 1.2gpm (like using 4 green nozzles or 4 yellow nozzles). The bypass recirculates some flow from the discharge of the pump back to the inlet of the pump to keep the flow rate high enough to avoid cycling. I don't believe this pump is a bypass model.

Yes, it is possible to use this pump to supply a carpet wand, however the pressure and flow are on the low end for a carpet cleaning situation. Also care should be taken to select the proper cleaning jet to create spray and not just a trickle at the wand. The typical use in a carpet cleaning setup would be a pump such as this feeding an adjustable high pressure pump, or this pump used as part of sprayer to prespray detergent.

This diaphragm pump would not be used in that application. Northern does offer the Pressuremate by Simer that that is made specifically to increase the water pressure in your home.

Reliable Pump The pump is highly reliable, and remains functional for several years, even when stored outdoors on a spray tank. It's an on-demand pump that provides sufficient pressure to apply liquid pesticides to lawns and gardens. I've given it four stars rather than five stars because on rare occasions, it seems to momentarily pause, but then goes right back to work. The Northern Tool price is very competitive, and the pump is a good value. May 7, 2012

SHURflo diaphragm pump 1.8 GPM I have used these pumps for many years. I bought the first one back in 1989 and continue to use them to this day. I have a small farm and my spray rig gets a lot of use. I spray both pre and post emergent products and this pump handles them without a problem. I just put the spray unit in my UATV and start spraying. Yes, they will wear out eventually but I get several years use out of each one and that makes them very cost effective. I don't think you can go wrong with one of these pumps. March 16, 2011
