Heavy-Duty Differential Axle - 38in. Length
Great for human power
I have used two of these for large, multi-wheeled, human-powered vehicles. Because it is engineered to take go kart stress it holds up quite well on a bike.
I like how it's machined on both sides so you can add two sprockets OR a sprocket and a brake.
You can also use two, in tandem, to provide skid steering on a human-powered tracked vehicle. One acts as the main axle and the other provides "input" in the form of a steering wheel. If you think of the diff as a mechanical calculator where x+y=0, you can see how this works as x+y+a+b=0 where "a" and "b" represent turning the steering wheel left or right.

Not just for Go-Karts...
I purchased one of these about 18-19 years ago, to solve a need for a differential in a human powered all-terrain vehicle. In that configuration, it has been put through as much brutal torture as I could give it, geared it way down, hammered it with torque that kills bike parts, have broken chains on it, but this differential still works great. I've only had to disassemble, clean up, and re-oil & grease the unit once, it has far exceeded my original expectations.
I hope that these are not back ordered for long, I have a few other projects that need one also...

JUST PURCHASED MY 3RD AXLE
I built a motorized Bar Stool, using this axle,This is a great Design, and to add to another review..yes if you plan to hammer the brakes you may need a disc on both sides, i drive from one side of the axle and stop on the other side. apply the brakes smoothly and it will stop ...My bar stool runs 40mph and i feel safe running that speed with this axle. This is my 3rd axle...and it comes apart easily so you can put the axles in the lathe to cut or work on.

Excellent Quality Differential
I was immediately impressed when I opened the box to see this differential. It is beefy and well made. The quality is beyond what I expected. This was made by someone that is very precise and takes pride in their workmanship.
I'm using this in a human-powered all-terrain vehicle and it works for my needs very well. I would recommend this to anyone that needs a good differential.

i've used this axle on a trike with a 16hp briggs (though it's only rated for 10hp) - trike weighs roughly 600lbs plus two adult riders (another 350lbs.) - as a little upgrade i purchased two sprockets - one to use as a sprocket and the other i cut the teeth off (in a lathe) to use as a rotor - had to get longer bolts to accomidate the second sprocket - the gear housing held up fine - would recommend at least 4 bearings - 2 as close to the gear housing as possible (to keep the axle centered) and 2 as close to the hubs as possible (for support) - overall this is the best axle i've ever used - little side note for those with machining abilities - the diff can be easily disassembled to machine keyways the full length of the axle - also longer axles can be made - the diff gears are not splined so you can mill some flats on 1" round stock and cut the axles as long as you want..................... hope this helps

38 INCH LENGHT
THIS AXLE IS REALLY GOOD.WORKS NICE BUT I THINK NORTHEN TOOLS SHOULD ALSO SELL THIS AXLE WITH 48 INCH LENGHT TOO.I USE THEM TO BUILT PEDICABS AND I PREFER THEM LONGER. TO MAKE MY BIKE CARRIAGE MORE STABLE AT TAKING CORNERS OR SUDDEN MOVEMENTS.

This is a great axle for products other than go karts. I used it to build a 2nd drag racing lawn tractor. I mounted the mini bike drum/sprocket on the housing (with a little machining). Works great, both wheels hook up and you can turn sharp no problem. but for baking purposes the key ways should be longer.

Nice looking unit for the price.
The differential axle works well in my kart. I'm very happy with the unit and especially the price.

I used this axle on a homemade kart screamer, I have a 8 H.P. briggs up front ,and on hard runs we will break the through bolts ,"one at a time" .I have found good luck with grade 8 machine bolts. the thread is long enough , and the allen head is good for tight tolerances...I do wish more sprocket selections were possible , and the atv live axle hub is a good fit for this axle, buy lots of them.
