Yes, for sure. All of the BatteryMINDer models back off to a very gentle maintenance mode once the battery is fully charged, and the desulfation mode continues. I use four of the older model 12117's to maintain a bunch of batteries every winter...I bring eight or more batteries home from our off-grid property after deer season, ensure they all are fully charged, and then hook them up, two to each 12117 (differences in the battery types and sizes prevent me from hooking 4 up to a single 12117). Then I leave them on the charging bench all winter. No problems in six years (and I've only had to replace one of them in that time...and that one was my fault).

On my farm tractors I have the battery minder on all year around and the batteries work great they are always maintained at a 100% level. When I first started using the battery minder my batteries were old and not very strong after 3 years of use with the battery minder they are as strong as they were when new. Answer to your question I have found it safe to leave the battery minder connected and plugged in year around.

Yes, I have left mine connected to my stared Jaguar for probably 9 months. It is like it was build for that job. Oh wait, it was. You should experience fewer battery failures in the future using this.

This BatteryMINDer can be connected to your vehicle's battery all winter long. It will work down to 0 degrees F. However, it will not work on batteries that are already frozen. When installed on a non-frozen battery, it will keep it charged/maintained even when the ambient temperature drops into freezing temps.

This model 1500 will charge/maintain a AGM Optima battery?
-
JohnMc· 9 years ago
Yes, this charger will work just fine on an OPTIMA AGM battery, but this charger is not the best choice for most other AGM batteries.
Ideally, most AGM batteries like to see about 1/2 volt higher float voltage than a typical flooded lead-acid batteries (the kind with the filler caps where you add water). Using a charger designed for flooded lead acid batteries will slightly undercharge these AGM batteries (though it's better than not charging them at all). For Optima AGM batteries, the preferred float voltage is identical to that used for flooded led-acid batteries, so this charger would be a good choice (it's what I use on my Optima batteries).

Daave· 12 years ago
According to the VDC Electronics (manufacturer of the batteryminder) while it's not designed for most AGM types, it has been specifically tested and approved for Optima's AGM type battery.

Yes but it may undercharge it... However I think this concern is a bit overstated as cars tend to float charge their batteries when operating at around 13.4V-14.7V so I'd like to think these chargers do a better job than your alternator, perfect voltage or not. The best part about these temp compensating chargers is that if your battery is in good health, it shouldn't boil the battery if temperatures get really high.

what adapter is required for 220 volt opperation with this
-
JohnMc· 13 years ago
Buddyjr is correct on this one. I just got my Model 1500 in the mail. The owner's manual lists 100-240 VAC

No adapter is needed to convert electric cause it operates from 100 to 240 volts automatically. You'll need the right mechanical plug adapter depending on the country(s) you will be using it in. Buy these plug adapters from any travel luggage seller or on-line.
The Continental Europe adapter will see you through in Western Europe and many other areas, but check further.Helpful?

VDC Electronics does manufacture a 220/240 Volt Battery charger for 12 Volt batteries, the model E12248. It is similar to the model 12248 that Northern Tools sells, but set up for 220/240 volt input.
It's a whole lot more expensive than the Model 1500, and a bit more expensive than the 120 volt model 12248. If the model 1500 meets your needs, you might find it less expensive to buy a small 240V to 120C adapter and use that. Such adapters do exist, but I'm not up on where you'd find one.

Is model 1500 acceptable for use with an aircraft battery .
-
BobMcLean2· 12 years ago
The manufacturer says that an aircraft specific charger should be used, primarily because the specific gravity in an aircraft battery is different and the maximum charge voltage should be less. These units are designed to provide very specific charging voltages in different parts of their cycles. There is an 12v aircraft batteryminder model available for C*ncorde batteries and another one for the rest. Then they have 24 v models. I think Northern carries some of these products, but they are more expensive then the 1500 model.

No,
doesn't meet Concorde or Gill battery specs. Only one I'm aware of is one of BatteryMINDer's aviation models.Helpful?
-
JohnMc· 13 years ago
BatteryMinder does make some aircraft-specific models. In fact they were the top-rated models for aircraft by Aviation Consumer.
They make models for both 14V and 28V aircraft batteries. They are a good bit more expensive than the non-aviation models.

Because of the specific gravity in aircraft batteries, this charger cannot be used with them.

As long as the battery minder was connected to the battery before the temperature goes below zero, the charging of the batteries would not be affected.

BatteryMINDerProductExpert· 10 years ago
If the BatteryMINDer was connected to the battery before the temperature dropped below freezing and the battery was not frozen, it will not have any effect at all. The warmth from components inside the BatteryMINDer will keep the charger running normally.

IS IT WEATHERPROOF?
i was looking at the weatherproof battery tender model for one of my outdoor vehices but its only 800ma , this one is higher current but i dont think its weatherproof.C
-
Daave· 12 years ago
My suggestion for using this charger outside is to use an electrical extension cord and place the charger in an area so that it's protected from the elements. Letting the charger get directly exposed to rain/sunlight etc would be a really bad idea and would make the temperature compensation not work properly. Treat the charger as you would treat the batteries. (Don't leave them in direct exposure to the elements). So if you're tending/charging a car in a car port, put the charger in the engine bay and lower the hood and it will be fine... (Just don't try driving the car like this!!!)

I have a diesel truck with 2 batteries. Do I hook it up to one or both batteries?
If I need to charge both batteries do I need to disconnect the terminals or can I just clip the minder on without diconnecting?
-
PAPnGA· 11 years ago
If the batteries are in the truck, you really only need to connect to one... just like your alternator connects to one. Parallel circuits charge and discharge together. That's why you replace them in pairs even when only one is bad!!

Unit can maintain up to 4 batteries at one time when connected in parallel (requires use of Y-Connectors Item# 27879 (sold separately) or customer supplied 18-ga. insulated wire). When charging the batteries in the vehicle it should not be necessary to disconnect batteries. However please follow the manufacturers recommendation in the manual.

What type batteries can be charged at one time
Can a gel, deep cycle, and starter batteries be maintained at one time on the mode. 5cc015 or 1500. I also have a chev. diesel with two batteries. can these batteries be charged through the cigarette lighter or do they need to be hooked up in parrallel?
Thanks.
-
Daave· 12 years ago
Yes this charger can be used to maintain a Deepcycle/starter Flooded Lead Acid and Optima AGM battery. Not suitable for Gel batteries as this charger has a higher float charging voltage than what GEL batteries need. I don't know about charging through the 12v cigarette/Accessory as I don't know if your lighter is always live (with key not in ignition) and this charger doesn't include a 12V cigarette adapter so you'd have to make that work in your own way. But otherwise, since the batteries are in parallel, this charger should have no issue with maintaining both batteries.

-
ProductExpert6· 13 years ago
It will maintain the batteries as long as they are all 12 volt. It must be hooked up in parallel. It would not charge through the cigarette lighter.
