Being the Hobart Handler 210MVP will draw 24 amps at 230 volts, a 30 amp circuit breaker would be recommended. For the gauge of wire needed, may we suggest contacting a local electrician due to local codes required.

You will need a 2 pole 30 Amp breaker to run this machine. This will require 10 gauge wiring. With this in mind, if you are going to make a long(25'+) extension cord and run the welder at max amperage extensively, I would make the cord with 8 gauge wire. This will help prevent any possible voltage drop issues.

I am successfully running the Hobart 210 MVP from my 5kW generator. My generator has a surge rating of 6250 Watts. The Suburu engine hums along just fine with the welder on max amperage.

Answers

The welder can be used with either the 2# or 10# spools. The flux wire would require no gas. The type gas for the other wires would depend on the type of welding you are doing. If you are welding carbon steel you would use argon/co2 mix, if welding aluminum you would want 100% argon, for stainless steel you would use tri-gas. The most common used is the argon/co2 mix.

With this Hobart Handler 210MVP, if you are welding with flux core wire you do not need gas. Gas is required when welding with solid wire.

Hi! For general mig welding of mild steel I use a quality brand .035" ER70S-6 solid core wire with shielding gas.For gas I prefer the argon/carbon dioxide mixture with the regulator set around 25 CFH.If there is any amount of wind where you weld,you're probably better off using flux core wire with no gas.A good one is .035" lincoln Innershield NR-211-MP.Always choose a good quality welding wire for best results!

Awesome I moved up from a Hobart 140 Handler to the 210MVP. I really like the dual voltage. I can use it anywhere there's a 110 outlet and use the 220 in my shop for welding thicker stock. It's the best of both worlds. April 23, 2013

nice welder I upgraded from the handler 140 to this. I really liked my 140, and i always found I could get the job done decently with it...but this new one definintely has the power so I dont have to screw around. And I got the spool gun also. It takes some getting used to, and Im certainly not as good with it as the regular mig gun on steel. But Im happy with its capabuilities. April 5, 2013

A great Welder, but I just traded up from 175 Hobart and the only thing I miss is the cart. The previous welder was good, but this one is better in every way. I had to upgrade my electrical circuit to 30 amp, but that was a small price to pay for the extra power. It really seems to weld much better from thin to heavy steel. I wish I had bought this one first. Although they did not offer the dual voltage option back then it would not have mattered much. While that is nice to have you have to realize on 120 volts you have a 140 amp welder and all it's limitations; power, duty cycle etc. A 240 volt machine is the only choice for me. Very pretty welds. The first arc I drew was on 1/4' steel and it made as pretty a bead as I have ever laid. I can't say why but it is much easier to use than my older Hobart and they are very similar. The one complaint I have is the poorly designed cart that I got for free. I am surprised that Hobart would put their name on or supply this cart. It was obviously built by the lowest bidder and NOT by someone that has ever used one. The cart has no place to wrap your cables (ground or torch) there is NO handle and it is so low to the ground that unless you are under 4'8'' tall you need to bend over to use it. Since there is no handle or place to store cables you WILL use the cables to pull it around the shop on wheels that just pass for adequate. They also will not roll over the cables which are usually on the floor anyway. If the cart is not free don't buy it! And if it is give it away or use it for a flower stand. Other than the poor cart the Welder is great and would be hard to improve. The manual is a little weak on some things such as discribing the wire feed wheels; I had to call to discover that drive wheels for wire sizes other than .030 are an option and must be purchased separately. All of the consumables are standard Hobart/MIller and readily available. I also like the upgraded ground clamp. Although the one on my previous Hobart gave me little trouble most times, this one seems much better and should contact better and live a lot longer. I'd recomend this one to a friend and I'd buy this welder again. Your first project should be a well designed cart. January 30, 2013

Excellent Investment The Hobart 210MVP was an early Christmas gift from my family. I spent considerable time researching 115V and 230V welders as I wanted the convenience of 115 and the power 230. The choice was clear. Northern Tool, being the best store under sun, always carries a healthy in store inventory so a quick ride to my local store and I was ready to go. The Hobart 210 is nothing short of exceptional. There is quality in every component. In both 115 and 230, the arch is smooth and consistent.
