The SHOP FOX® Vertical Mill M1001 is great for the small shop that wants a compact unit. Features a 1 1/2 HP motor with 9 speeds ranging from 240 to 2760 RPM. A variable speed power feed with rapid override efficiently moves the 6 1/8in. x 26in. table back and forth along its 15 7/8in. travel. Both the head and column rotate 45° in both directions. A single shot lubrication system makes maintenance quick and easy!

Answers

The spindle head can be rotated vertically 45 degrees both ways and can be rotate horizontally on the column 45 degrees in both directions.

Answers

Of the 3 axes, only the longitudinal control has a power(self feed) option. The speed and stopping point can be adjusted on the power feed. The cross and knee feed can only be controlled manually. This cannot be auto programmed using a computer.

SHOP FOX M1001 Vertical Mill Excellent sized machine for the home shop. Probably the largest milling machine that is practical to move around. I can lift and position it using a rented engine hoist. I was very impressed first off with the packaging and container that it was shipped in. The packaging consisted of a sturdy hardwood pallet, which easily supported the 936 pounds that this mill weighs in at. The outer case was 3/8" plywood and definitely protected the mill. The mill was securely bolted down to the pallet. The machine was wrapped in heavy mil plastic to repel any liquid during shipment. All of the loose assembly parts were well packaged and protected during shipment. ShopFox uses a waxy grease to protect the unpainted surfaces. The substance was very easy to remove with mineral spirits. Product info incorrectly states there is a built in coolant pump. The word "pump" should read "tray". The control switches are conveniently located although I wish they were of better quality. The fit and finish of the machine is very nice but I did have some difficulty fitting the hand wheels without some deburring. No where in the advertisement does it state the hand wheels move the table .125 per revolution. That makes the numbering of the feed dials a little odd, but they are still marked in .001 graduations. Since I usually make adjustments by counting off each .005, and then by .001, so this will not be an issue for me. The power feed works very well. The two spindle speed change belts are easily accessed. The machine performs nearly as good as a full sized Bridgeport. I do not detect any vibration when using it. With a few more accessories, this machine will be a valuable addition to my shop. You will need a good machine vise, (I put on an imported, 4" wide, swivel model). A set of R8 collets and some end mills will get you started. Delivered to my driveway and easily put into service, I am happy to add it to my workshop. August 15, 2010
