Evapo-Rust - 5-Gallon
Excellent with inevitable (but few) shortcomings
I've used two gallons over the past three weeks to de-rust about 150 hand tools (donated to a charity thrift store) which were suffering from everything from light surface rust to deep pitting; some of the tools had the distinctive look of metal that had lived the last thirty years on, or under, a barn floor. Generally successful, sometimes surprisingly so, though sometimes need to soak them for up to 24 hours in extreme cases. Does better in warm weather, I think. Wears out when completely black, maybe 30-50 tools per gallon. Tends to leave a matte gray or black surface finish behind that needs to be removed with a wire wheel, wire brush, or steel wool, especially after the first use. Works best on mild steel or cast or malleable/ductile iron; much less successful on hardened steel (e.g. files) or alloy/tool steels (this is explicit in the instructions). Will soften and often remove paint. Will completely remove some japanning-like coatings and black oxide finishes. If the tool has wooden parts, will of course soak into the wood and may stain it black; remove them first if you can. In the attached photo (my latest batch of refurbishings), the large coarse rasp (top left) resisted most stubbornly -- took two days--; most of the rest did well. The Utica wrench (third wrench up) still shows staining in the plated alloy steel. Many of these started as almost unrecognizable blobs of rust., e.g. the old Stanley try square, the long-handled float lying behind it, and the tack puller to its left. In short, this is very good stuff, it won't last quite as long as you'd like, and it won't work quite as well as you hope on everything. But invaluable. Having used up my first two gallons, I'm prepared to buy the 5-gal. bucket and go from there.

Undoing the effects of Hurricane Sandy
I got hit pretty hard by Hurricane Sandy and the 10' storm surge resulted in about 3' of water in my auto shop. I have been taking all the tools in each drawer and letting them soak in the bucket and pulling them out after awhile and the tools all look much better than before the storm. Chrome finish looks good on tools, can see where rust got deeper on others. Wrenches I could not open or close work like new after soaking. Make sure you clean grease off first, and like the other post says the finish on some tools can be a form of rust and the blacking on my reciprocating impact gun tips came off, but better than the red rust.

Works as described!
Does the job! Just soak it and wait a day or 2 depending on how rusty it is and it removes just the rust. Easy clean up!

Bought 5 gallons of this a couple of years ago to remove rust from an old machine tool. It works every bit as well as they say. I keep the 5 gallon bucket handy and when I find a part or tool with rust, I just drop it in the bucket. When new, it only takes a hour to remove the rust, but you can leave it in for a month or more without damage. After 2 years of using the same 5 gallons, it is starting to take longer to remove the rust, so I am here to get another bucket.
One caution. You can remove rust from "blacked" or "blued" items, but since these finishes are really a type of rust, it will strip the blacking or bluing off. Ok if that is what you want, or the item has rusted in spite of the blacking.

Evapo Rust works Great!!1
Awesome product, I have been using it for a few years now to remove rust from a 1970 Honda CB 350 that I rescued out of the ground. most of the parts were rusted badly, but a few days in of submersion and they look like they just came out of the factory.

Absolutely Amazing !!
I was skeptical about how well Evapo-Rust would work but I had a BMW differential that was going to be scrapped due to the extreme rust on the outside surface and thought it was worth a shot. I submerged the diff housing in the liquid and forgot about it. 7 days later I remembered it and removed the diff housing. I was amazed !! It had completely "eaten" the rust from the housing and it looked like brand new cast iron !! I have since used it to restore brake calipers, steering knuckles, and other rusty components with awesome results !
Great product that does way more than it says it will do !

I wasn't sure of how this product would work since it is enviromentally friendly. I have found that may products that are enviromentally friendly do not have the power to do the job. That is not the case with this product. Evapo- Rust does the job. I had a heat transfer module that was rusted very badly. I took a five gallon bucket of evapo rust and immersed the heat exchanger in the solution. Within in one day the solution had turned completely black and 99% of the rust was removed from the exchanger. I did have to order another 5 gallon bucket to finish the job but considering having to buy a new heat exchanger that was a steal of a deal. I would recommend this product to anyone who needs to get rust off fast......
