Wet sharpener
This product is great. Puts a razor sharp edge on all of my timber framing chisels and slicks without heating them up. Which makes them stay sharp for longer.

Design Flaw
Unit works well as a sharpening device. But the drive system in my opinion is guranteed to fail. The drive motor shaft turns a wheel ( part # 24 friction gear) with a soft rubber layer that with the slightest excess pressure on the grind stone the drive shaft peels away the rubber from the drive wheel.
I believe a belt drive system would make this an excellent value. But as it is now beware. I hope someone will read this and consider changing the drive. Northern Tool has been excellent to do businedss with, the're sending me a new replacement unit but still with the same future problem.

Great wetstone sharpener
I've been using my Northern wetstone sharpener for about 30 days now. I wish I had purchased this sooner. I have done several knives and scissors and what a great job it does. The slow rotation doesn't burn the steel and the set up and angle guide is easy to use. The final touch is with the honing leather, wow what a job it does. I am a hunter and fisherman and do all my own buthchering and I love the job this machine does.

Comparison to Tormek
A quick glance shows us that this is similar to the Tormek style sharpening system. Though it is not as fancy and not nearly as expensive, it works admirably well. Another reviewer complained that his wheel didn't run true and that it wore down quickly. Well, that's true of all such wheels. The operator must "true" the wheel before use. The wheel is FRIABLE, meaning; it is supposed to break down, thereby exposing fresh abrasive. That allows it to cut quickly without loading. Further, this type of Friable wheel is effectively TWO grits. The "Open" grit is coarse for rough grinding. Then the wheel is "closed" by using a special abrasive block that breaks down the surface grit into smaller pieces, thereby making finer grit for finer honing.
The strop is the last step. Charged with rouge, it finishes the blade to a mirror polished edge.
I have used this and the Tormek. This gives you 95% of the tormek functionality at a MUCH lower price. If you need special jigs for turning tools, the Euro quality motor or angle-setting tools, then you either have to make them or buy Tormek. Otherwise, this is one of the best deals I have seen for this type of sharpening-grinder.

Blade Sharpener
I looked at several other sharpeners from other places. For the price I do believe this to be the best buy.
I looked localy and could not find any wet sharpeners that I thought were any better, in fact the one that I did find was about $300.00 and did not have any of the fixtures to use to sharpen any tools with it.
I have sharpened my lathe tools with it and am very happy with the results. Also have sharpened several knives. WORKS GREAT!!!
Thank you, JBM

Buyer Beware
I am very disappointed with the quality of this machine. Both the strop wheel and the grinding wheel do not run true, they wobble and cannot be trued up. After sharpening one chisel, I was surprised at the amount of residue from the wheel that was left in the bottom of the reservoir. I can see right now that the stone will not last very long. Quality control missed this one and a much better stone should be included for the price.

Wet sharpener
The 8" wet sharpener is a must have for those' who work with leather, knives, wood tools, and household utinsils (?). Being able to sharpen other house hold items is just another added benefit, how ever, I see no place to order additional wheels or even a dresser for the stones (A little more instruction on the care of the stones would be nice), I guess if you need it call, and I'll to just that. This machine is well worth it !!

wet sharpener
Works very well, Sharpened every knife in the house and started in on a couple of hatchets, A little surprised on how fast the stone wears down but I did sharpen a lot of knives, a finer stone would be nice for some knives, but overall works great.
