Are IR Thermometers Only Good For Measuring Surface Temp?

Details:

For example, I couldn't use it as a replacement to measure the inner temperature of a steak? I think I know the answer is no, but wanted to confirm. My use would be mainly for culinary reasons. Thank you -JP

Answers

This, along with all other Microtemp IR Thermometers, are not able to be calibrated by the user themselves. You would need to contact outside calibration services yourself to determine if this unit can be done. The units themselves do not come with a calibration certificate.

Lots more uses than you realize I originally bought this to use when I was doing competition BBQ. I wanted to be able to get the surface temperature of my pit (not the internal temps), the surface temps of the firebox and the surface temps of the meat. It does all of that. Then I realized that this would be useful in automotive. I used it in diagnosing a leak in the exhaust of my Jeep. Since one of the ports was leaking right under the exhaust manifold, that port was showing way hotter than the others. From there, I found myself using this to check the A/C vents in my house to see which cool at what level and tune them. Then I started using it to check for drafts around doors and windows. Now it stays in my toolbox full time as I'm constantly checking and monitoring temps. April 24, 2013

IR Thermometer I used it for the first time this evening to check the cooling system on an antique car. I was able to compare radiator temperatures at the top inlet, halfway down the radiator and at the bottom of the radiator. This is great as the engine of the car was running. I can't wait to use it on my Stanley Steamer in the spring as there is a valve stem that always seems to give a serious burn to my arm although my arm never touches it. I want to see the temperature of that valve. I know I will find other uses for the thermometer besides antique cars. I can highly reccommend it. October 25, 2011

A Toolbox Must Have You have got to get one of these! I bought mine out of curiosity having always wanted to own a remote sensing thermometer. This one is a good deal and Very accurate. When I bought this thermometer I was not sure what I was getting but have already found dozens of uses for it. My best guess is every toolbox needs one of these. November 24, 2010
