Can you put longer welding and ground cables on this welder?

Answers

The leads on this machine are connected right to the transformer. A person could extend the current leads by splicing longer leads onto it. I do know that others have done this with success. However, that would require cutting the current leads and would void any warranty.

You can, and I did but you have to cut the leads that are on it, install two terminal blocks, then put on the new leads. The OEM leads are connected straight to the wires coming out of the tramsformer!

Any welding supply store should have a set of cable connectors that you can use to put longer cables on the welder. You cut the leads a couple of feet from the welder. Then strip back about 1 inch of the insulation, then slide the connector cover on to the cable, attach the cable connector to the cable and then attach the connector cover to the connector. You will need 1 set of cable connectors for each welding lead. We have used then at the ship yard for years. You usually find them standard on Lincoln, Hobart and other high end welders. I researched putting a set on my Northern Industrial ARC 200. They run about 10 to 25 dollars a set. The biggest problem that I find is the cost of the leads them selves. The cable usually run about 7 to 10 bucks a foot. I don't know if the trade off is worth it.

it will look like a house plug, but much bigger with prongs that are 1-7/16" L with one round, and two flat ones. One of the round ones is 5/16" W and the other one is 1/2" W.

The manual warns against voltage less than 207 Volts AC. It must be 230 V. single phase AC.

Northern Tool does not have a wattage rating for different amperage outputs. Although it may run at lower amperage settings, we recommend to have access to at lest 9430 watts(41amps) to safely run this welder.

This is a basic stick welder. It does not have a generator feature and would need to be used in close proximity to an electrical power source. We do offer a welder/ generator that runs on gasoline and includes two 120v receptacles. See Below.

The tag on the welder says 41 amps, the most I've seen on my amp meter was 35.8 amps and that was at a 180 amp setting

Answers

The welder will draw up to 41 amps at 230 volt. To operate this you will need a generator with a minimum of 9500 rated watts. Keep in mind that you will want a larger generator if you intend on running any additional equipment at the same time as the welder.

good welder for larger projects My experience at work is with 480VAC DC output welders. I expected this AC output welder to be a little lacking in power. It isn't. I was very happy with what it can do. I use 7018AC rods for almost everything including out of position work. So far the highest I had it set was 100amps for 1/4" plate. It made full penetration welds and duty cycle was not an issue. I would recommend this welder for anyone who wants something more than a 110 buzz -box but doesn't have the cash for a welder/generator. June 4, 2013

Great Welder This welder is ready to go right out of the box! I have had this for a year now and have managed to build a 5x10 tandem dump trailer from the ground up and have also built a log splitter. Very easy to use and it seems to really like 1/8" 6011 and 1/8" 7018 rods. I was skeptical of the value for price when I purchased this but I am sure glad that I did. April 23, 2013

220 Arc Welder if you just want a nice 220 volt welder for basic welding, this unit is great and you can't beat the price. i welded everything from thinner sheet metal to thicker 3/8" steel and this unit never failed. Like other reviews have mentioned, the leads are kinda short so you have to have the unit very close to what you're welding... but other than that, you can't go wrong with this unit. April 23, 2013

Northern Industrial Welder The welder came to me broken and I was asked to try and fix it. I ended up sending it back and getting a different welder. The reason I rated it 2 stars was due to the cost if it worked it would have been a great value and the 2nd star was for customer service I was worried I would have to pay to send it back and they sent me the return lable. Most dealers will not pay for shipping even if it is defective. Great Customer service is why I continue to buy from Northern Tools. May 7, 2012

Not very good I would not purchase this item. Worked well for three simple welding projects in the first month I had it. Each only took about 15 minutes. On the fourth use, it would not power on. It would simply not function. I replaced it with a used Lincoln unit that works just fine. The price seems right, but it is very poor quality in my experience. The return process was not easy too. BIG welder, little price! I have been looking for an inexpensive 220v arc welder to replace a 110v unit I use to weld sheetmetal . Since I continuously have to use a friends Lincoln welder to weld anything thicker that car sheetmetal, I decided to get this one based on the other reviews I see here. Once I wired up a new 50 amp circuit at home, I plugged this unit it to see what it could do. I grabbed a 1/8" 6011 rod and 2 pieces of 5/8" steel. (it was the 1st thing I found) Set it at 125 & this unit buzzed through the welding process like a $1000 unit! Mind you the specs on this unit says it welds mild steel up to 3/8in. on single pass. I just did 5/8" in one pass, a clean weld. This is an EXCELLENT little welder. The price just makes it that much more attractive!! April 11, 2012
