will the pump handle carb cleaner, such as Gunks' Carb-Medic

Details:

My intentions are to use this 3 1/2 gal parts washer to clean carburators for rebuilding. The pump would have to stand up to a carburator cleaner such as Gunks' Carb-Medic, etc. Will it work with this cleaner? Thanks, SMS

No, this unit is made to be used with a non-flammable water-based degreaser or cleaning agent, such as Simple Green. Using this parts washer with any solvent based flammable product is not recommended and could result in potentially dangerous situation.

There is not a stand made specifically for the parts washer. It would be placed on a bench or table. Northern does offer a parts washer complete with a stand.

As far as I know, they don't make a separate stand for this small unit...it's really only designed to use on a small table or on top of a bench. The other units with rolling stands are too big for home garage use.
I bought one of the small aluminum folding steps (Wel-Bilt) and it also serves as a good-enough platform for this washer. But no, you would have to make your own stand I guess. I usally keep this parts washer tucked away somewhere when not in use. The last thing I need is yet one more thing to take up space in my garage and to have to sweep around!

Pump suction filter?

Does the suction inlet on the pump have a screen and or filter to remove particles from the cleaning fluid before re-interning the the inlet /suction of the pump?Thanks

looks like it has a plastic screen on the pump to stop big pieces from going back in to the unit. you can get a bag filter to filter out the small particles but it does not come with it

If the switch itself goes out, you'll probably spend darned near the same amount of money finding an exact replacement. For what these things cost, I'd just chunk it and buy another unit. Or you can bypass the switch by crimping the power leads together and wrapping with tape, and just plug it in when you need it....or mount a small power strip to the side with an on off switch. They make foot-operated switches on small extension cords (like for xmas lights), one of these would work well.

The owners manual does not prohibit the use of petroleum-based solvents in this unit, and, NT sells a grease-cleaning solvent if that's what you want to use. But frankly, I would use a parts cleaning pan to remove oily-greasy parts, then put them in this parts cleaner for final clean-up with the full-strength soap-based solution. This way, you end up with a much cleaner part ready to work on rather than recirculating the nasty oily stuff all over the part. Maybe one washer with petrol-based cleaner and another with the soap-based? I would simply avoid the petrol-based in this unit.

Not a good idea in my opinion as thinner is pretty hot stuff, and would probably attack rubber in the pump. You could use a solvent like kerosene or diesel fuel, but again, anything thing like gasolene or thinner or petroluem fuel is really unsafe from a fire and heath hazard (lungs) point of view. Maybe a gallon of "Goo-Gone" stuff or WD-40 would be better, but disposal can be a problem. Give the soap-based stuff a try first.

Good little washer Works well. Perfect for smaller parts, I use it for bicycle components in my shop. I'm using mineral spirits as a cleaner, which is not recommended by the manufacturer. This has a water based pump unit. Any water based cleaner doesn't work for a darn on greasy parts. I'm going to see how long the pump lasts with the oil product. I would give it five stars if the pump was for an oil cleaner application. Only been using it for two months, so how long will it last? Time will tell. October 8, 2012

graet for small jobs I bought this parts washer to clean parts when I had to rebuilt my yamaha golf cart motor. Great value and perfect for smaller jobs. More than paid for itself in its ability to degrease the engine parts. Much safer than petroleum solvents. I plan on completelely cleaning out the tank and using the item to clean pistols. I'm glad that I bought it because it's definitely handy to have. My only complaint would be that the volume of degreaser fluid is little high, but I can live with that. January 16, 2012

Excellent for the money I bought this parts washer for my husband because as a police officer, he likes to clean his own guns. This particular one was recommended by a fellow officer. My husband is thrilled with everything about this washer from the size, to the materials, to how it functions.
