This Brinly-Hardy Tow-Behind Box Scraper is a great all-around tool for landscaping, gardening and other yardwork. This solid piece of landscaping equipment can do anything that a box scraper can, but can also be modified for blade-only use, letting you move gravel, sand, snow, mulch and more, fill holes, spread topsoil and remove roots and other unwanted debris with very little effort.

  1. Is there an optional attachment to the box scraper in order to raise and lower with a winch or actuater?

    1. Sure, if you want to invest in an electric lift kit for your sleeve hitch! The box scraper has no options. You will need to come up with your own options.

    2. I installed the scraper on my 250cc ATV into a 2" receiver, and it raises and lowers. I had to fabricate a hitch that using an old jack screw to raise and lower, but you could do the same using a threaded rod. The advantage of the jack screw over a winch is that the jack screw allows you to put downward pressure on the scraper which will help prevent it from bouncing. I posted a review with photos of my setup on 3/8/2017. If Northern Tool posts it then you can look at it and make a hitch for yourself.

    3. Not that I know of , I used a tie down strap wrapped it around the back of my ATV rear brush guard and attached the hooks into the box scraper, pulled the strap to raise the box scraper worked fine for me

    4. No, but it wouldn't be hard to drill the tung and add an eye bolt for the winch.

    5. You need a sleeve hitch to raise and lower this unit and properly work it. MTD makes a sleeve hitch that can be adapted to most tractors that one is not available for.

    8. There was not one listed but as the picture shows, there is a handle that controls the height if the blade. I see no reason why a winch or actuator could not be used instead.

  2. Would this dig up a well packed gravel driveway?

    1. With the scarfer blade tips, it might scrape little bits at a time but it with some weight on the back of the blade and some pre soaking of the gravel area, it might do well.

    2. It worked on my asphalt milling driveway that is mixed with gravel. I did not have to add weight, but you can if need be.

  3. How can I move it when done, so I will not drag more dirt or material . Can Iift it? Can wheels be mounted so you may pull i around without diging in

    1. You need a Sleeve Hitch on a tractor or ATV to use this item. The Sleeve hitch will have a mechanism to lift any implements attached.

      The Brinly Ground engaging units such as the Box Scraper do require a sleeve hitch which you would obtain from the tractor manufacture. The Sleeve hitch is what raises and lowers the implement.

  4. what horsepower is needed to pull with John deere lawn tractor

    also does John Deere sell the required sleeve hitch?

    1. I don't know about the HP but yes, you get the sleeve hitch from John Deere. It is tractor specific and fairly easy to install. I bought it from a discount JD dealer on-line.

    2. I pulled it with the John Deere d105 17.5hp. I did not use weights or the teeth attachment (sorry I don't know the nomenclature). I also did not use a sleeve attachment. Just the mower attachment pin. It worked great at leveling sandy soil but maxed out the mower. I hope this helps.

    3. I do not know much about JD,s I have a Cub Cadet 25 HP . It didn't really put much strain on it but I do have 22" rear tires required for 3 point hitches.

    4. This box scraper requires a minimum of 19 HP from the tractor.

      The customer will need to contact the tractor manufacturer (John Deere) for purchasing the correct sleeve hitch which is specific to the model of the tractor.

    I have a lawn tractor with a cat 0 three point hitch, can I use this scraper with that type of hitch?

    1. No. It only attaches with the single point, sleeve hitch

  7. Will this work without a sleeve hitch

    I have an MTD Yard Machine lawn tractor. Can I hook the box scraper directly to the tractor without a sleeve hitch? A sleeve hitch is expensive and I really don't need to raise the scraper, it can be on the ground the entire time I am using it.

    1. You could, but it would bounce all over and be useless. You need a sleeve hitch to use this effectively.

  8. Would this attachment work with an UTV?

    2. I mounted it on a Polaris 250 with a 2" receiver. I had to fabricate a hitch which goes between the scraper and the receiver, but with $20 of metal from the surplus yard and a little cutting, drilling and welding, I have a great hitch that raises and lowers the scraper and puts downward pressure on the scraper so it works great. If you can not weld, I am sure you can modify my design to be a bolted together unit. I added a review on 3/8/2017 with photos of my hitch so look for that review if Northern Tool posts it.

    3. Scraper would work with any small motorized vehicle, such as riding mower,(at least 16 hp) ATV, UTV, small garden tractor..just leave youreself plenty of room to turn around!

    4. The attachment could be used with your UTV. You would need to have a sleeve hitch put on the UTV. These can be purchased at your local tractor supply store.

  9. want to buy a brinly hardy box scraper #365342, what is a sleeve hitch?

    1. A sleeve hitch is the single point attachment point and also is the mechanism to raise and lower implements. Mine attaches to the hydraulic ram that raises and lowers my mower deck and mounts to the back of the mower frame so it can raise and lower.

    1. This box scraper requires a minimum of 19 HP. If the lawn mower meets this requirement, it could work with it. The user would also need to purchase the correct sleeve hitch which is specific to the model of the lawn tractor.
