n.g. when needed most
installed this unit last nov. 2011. for a customer when sandy hit it ran for 2 days then crapped out. got it running for 1 more day then stopped for good. these people are elderly and man is bed ridden not good for me. had to get a portable gas generator and hook into the house and refuel 2 times. the local service man was great and over nighted the part the nest day. need to install 2 more generators not sure if i should use generac brand!!! installed 2 other units, they are o.k.

short lifespan
I purchased and had this unit installed for my elderly parents. It worked flawlessly for a couple of years. It performed the selftest every week. The longest continuous run time was 15 hours. The problem came when the rotor shorted. I had a tech come out and he determined that the windings in the rotor were junk. Now the repair cost is going to $2000.00. Generac doesn't stand behind their product.

Self Installed
I just finished installing the generator. Great product. Worked just like the manual side. No problems installing. I would have prefered bottom knock out holes on the switch panel. Started on the first crank. Handled all the power out test. Switched loads smoothly. Use some wire labels and wiring is super easy. I poured a concrete pad to set it on. Also, shipping does not include handling so you have to unload it from the truck and/or order a lift gate. Talk to deliverer. I rented a bobcat for $100 buck to unload/set and picked mine up at the dist center in a pickup. I wish I'd done this years ago. Ironically, we lost power for 14 hrs, the day before I finished the install. Determine what circuits you need to run. I found the 14kw size just about gives me everything minus a hot tub.

poor durability
My 4 yr old generac died of a failed rotor after less than 80 hours of use. If you ever have to talk with an electrician about replacing a rotor on a generator off warranty make sure you're sitting down. I'm disappointed with how little I've gotten out of this rig before it started falling apart and requiring major repair.

Best investment
I purchased this unit in 2001. I had the panel installed while our house was being built. We live in a rural area in Metro Atlanta area (farms are on the street) and I knew we would be the last ones serviced when there are power outages. This was the best thing that I had done. What gave me the idea to install one was an episode on This OId House. I will say, "IT IS THE BALM on power outages." Our house is the only house in the area with lights when there is an outage. We continue watching tv and doing what we normally would do. Our phone rings from the neighbors calling wishing they had done the same thing.
My only regret, I should have gone bigger. That way the whole house could be under power. The next house that build will have a unit to service every circuit. The unit I have covers the basis and then some. We have 6400 sqft house (three refrigerators, three garage door openers, stove (gen-aire), security system, security gate, outdoor lighting, home theatre,
master suite, one heating unit (fan) only).
Best investment that I have made. Year 8 and no issues.

14 KW Guardian Stnadby Generator
After my portable welder / emergency generator of 30 years gave up the ghost i went looking for something that would be safe, secure, and reliable for my family in my absence . (i travel often. ) We are inthe country and on a well, so we have nothing when the power goes out. The 14 KW Guardian (LPG) went in quickly and easily as it included everything i needed to install it but a few simple tools. There were none of the normal endless runs to the the hardware store for missing bits and pieces that make less well packeaged units a chore to install. We are subject to frequent power outages in my area. For 3 years now it has performed flawlessly on many occasions. Every Sunday PM when i have it programmed to perform its weekly self diagnositc run, it reminds me that my family is safe from the effects of power outages. In terms of maintenance It has required only annual oi changes (easy since it has a convenient external drain) and has never given me any problems. The quality is evident throughout the unit. The internal battery maintenance circuit is a particulalry nice feature for an emergency unit. The battery is always live and ready to go.T A great feature of the unit is that it is particularly quiet. You can listen to to the TV or have a normal conversation only 25 feet away onthe other side of a wall of windows from it when it is running. Due to the LPG, there are no odors, no "rotten" gas to stabilize and no dangerous gas cans. I have recommended this to several friends who were looking for a better and safer source of standy power. The 14 Kw rating is sufficient to run the entire house - business as usual. Best "insurance" investment i ever made.

Great Unit
I bought my generator several years ago, shortly after hurricane Rita. It has worked perfectly ever since. When Ike came thru, I had some of the neighbors at our house. It was nice to have air conditioning when everyone else was without. Two of my neighbors now have installed their own. Quality sells.

If your power frequently goes out, BUY THIS!
After a weak hurricane 7 years ago in Northern, VA took out power for 6 days I could no longer do without this machine. I run a business out of my house and a portable generator with extension cords running everywhere and getting up in the middle of the night to fill it with gas was just too much to ask for.
For the price of a used ATV a normal life returned. I have a large house and wanted EVERYTHING to work so I had my whole house powered except heat and AC. It may sound bad but that's what i wanted. I have a portable AC and plug in heaters if I need them so the inside is always comfortable. My neighbor who bought one after he saw mine in action wanted heat and AC so he has no oven and only half of his plugs. Of course we could have just bought a bigger unit in hindsight.
In 6 years its been pretty maintenance free except for synthetic oil changes. Only problem, like the first posted noted was it was tough to get a bad starter out but did not require disassembly. It WILL pull straight up and out but it is a very tight squeeze. New starter seems to be built much better than old unit so it appears this should last much longer.

not recommended
The first one we installed seized up afer less than 5 minutes. (Gardian replaced it under warranty) The second one has gone through 3 starters and two magnetos in 5 years. I have found that the way to have it available whe the power goes ot is to not run it except for a few times a year. Gardian's factory support appears to be non exhistant.
It is also rediculously hard to work on. Changing a starter takes hours due to the fact that the box cannot be opened up to access it.

No more without power
This unit along with it's bundled switch was purchased after a bad winter storm left us without power for 13 days. Without power, we also were without water since our water came from a well. Since then we have had two short outages for weather related problems. One for 1 day and the other for 3 days. My Dad, brothers, and sister live nearby. My sister did not lose power, but all the rest did. All came to our house to eat meal, use the toilet, and take showers/baths. We only lost power for about 30 seconds which was the time the unit needed to detect the power outage and start up. Ours was fueled by a 300 gal gas tank. Once you have one you will wonder why you didn't get it before.
