There is no optional tube available for the Northern Industrial Mini Drill Press that would raise the height of the press. The table can be moved up or down to accommodate different size items.

Short answer: No there is no extension tube, but yes, I'm pretty sure you can drill into longer or larger items than would be possible with the press as it's originally set up.

Long answer: I don't own this drill press, but I own two and I've used several others. This one is likely similar to those I've used. To give yourself a couple of extra inches, relax the lock that holds the work-piece table and swing it out of the way, placing the work-piece directly on the drill press' base.

For even larger items, loosen the set screws that hold the drill and motor in place, swing the drill & motor 180 degrees, and re-tighten the set screws. If the drill is still over your work bench, it will give you another two or three inches. If you place the drill press so that the drill is hanging out over the edge of your bench, you can drill into any item that will fit between the floor and the drill. I've used this technique to drill holes into the bottom of my work-bench legs, to insert leveling bolts/feet. JUST BE AWARE THAT WHEN YOU SWING THE DRILL AWAY FROM THE BASE, YOU NO LONGER HAVE ANY LEVERAGE TO FORCE THE DRILL DOWN. If you push it down hard, you'll lift the drill press and get the bit out of alignment with the hole you are drilling...just go slow and easy.

Starting on the bottom groove of the pulleys and working your way to the top the speed setting are as follows: 620, 1100, 1720, 2340 and 3100 RPM.

The top pulleys are the fastest and the bottom ones are the slowest. There is a RPM chart located on the inside of the cabinet lid with a pulley diagram.

Both the product manual and the NT&E expert agree that the max drilling capacity is 1/2 inch. The real answer is that the chuck will not accept drills with a SHANK greater than half an inch, but you can use bits that are larger, as long as the shank is 1/2 inch or smaller. That being said, be aware that the motor is only rated at 1/3 HP (about 250 W), so this drill cannot horse a large bit through even soft wood - it really is a small drill press. Also consider that some bits, like forstner bits, require a lot of torque to be driven rapidly. So if you want to use this drill to push bits over 1/2 inch, especially forstner bits, I think you should take it slow and real easy.

easy to use I used this drill press to ensure straight holes for dowels on my fireplace mantle to attach to the wall. It was easy and accurate for this job. (Of course this product would not work on the wall). I anticipate using it in my shop on other projects around the house. Save your money I bought this yesterday after driving over an hour to get it. Today tried it th first time: won't even drill 1/2" poplar without stalling. Nice Mini Drill Press Just received my mini-drill press this week and am very satisfied with the construction and quality for the price. It took me all of 20 minutes to assemble it and works great for small projects. I have a full size 2HP Drill press which works great but not for small projects. Very Very Good It does an excellent job. Only issue is sometimes belt slips when bit binds a bit. Wish it had a reverse but all in all great!!! Cheap Guess you get what you pay for. I wanted to drill some steal pipe but its not up to the task. On wood I guess it did a good job. Only has a 2in stroke so if you are going to drill a 4x4 you'll have to turn it over. Fits on the bench easily and is a lot lighter than I thought. That can also be a bad thing. March 14, 2011
