Vertical Lift on shallow well pump

Details:

I am putting this pump in the basement, sucking water ot of my sump pit to a spigot for irrigation. My question is, will this pump perform better with a smaller intake (near the sump pit) with a longer vertical lift (10 ft to the spigot.)

Or would it perform better near the spigot, yet increasing the intake to 15 feet vertical.

This Wel-Bilt Shallow Well Pump has a maximum suction lift of 26 feet, so it will perform great either way, but It is always better to have the pump as close to the water source as possible.

If you want to boost pressure a reducer wont help. Reducing will only increase velocity which can only be realized on an open ended nozzle or similar device. If you have city water and you want to augment it, dont do it without a backflow preventer on the city water side and a check vaslve on the pump. The only effective way to boost pressure is by adjusting the shut off switch. Be careful not to boost pressures above safe ratings for your water system and components.

Is the foot valve installed on the suction port on the pump, or at the end of the supply line?

Details:

I'm going to use this pump to irrigate a greenhouse. The water will be supplied by rain barrels. Do I need to install the foot valve in the line near the rain barrels, or in the suction port on the pump?

Once you have the foot valve installed, prime the pump by pouring clean water into the Priming Valve Inlet. When looking at the picture of the pump, the inlet is the black tap coming out of the top of the pump head at a 45 degree angle.

So Far, So Good Product was just as expected. The air bladder was already inflated to the correct pressure. The foot valve (check valve) was included, thank goodness. Pump is operating perfectly, so far. April 24, 2013

Backyard Well Pump Two Inch well sunk by hand, 34 feet, water at 10 feet. Installed pump, unit runs quiet & smooth, water flow is better than expected. Installed for watering plants & lawn plus emergency use. Also installed a Northern hand pump in case no power is available. Nice green unit which I remember on my uncles farm. So far I cannot come up with any negative problems with these units. But time & operation will show what long term survival will be. April 24, 2013

hunting camp well we have a swallow well at our hunting camp. some one wanted are well more than we did. found this on line at northern tool, it is better than what we had. better volume of water and great pressure.just wish we didnt have to find this from some one stealing . good pump.will buy one more or two, find something that works and they stop making it . Nice pump - for a while - after that, headaches I bought this pump in April 2011 (ord # 13055538) and I encountered some issues pretty much immediately. The input connections and the output connections appear to have been cut as a machine thread, not as a pipe thread, so whatever pipe connections were attached leaked through the tthreads - even with pipe joint tape in place. While the leaks were not significant, they continued. Additionallu, the output connection had a leak in the connection to the manifold on the pump (somewhere this pump didn't get a good testing before it was packaged and shipped). Despite the leaks, the pump worked well for about 6 months, and then the bladder inside the tank appeared to fail, and the pump cycled constantly. After switching to an external pressure tank the pump worked okay, but the leaks got worse to the point (today) where the pump just isn't workable any more, and I've grown tired of expending time, money and effort trying to account for its drawbacks. The pump was part of a backup system, pumping water from a tank a few feet away, to supply water in case I had problems with my gravity-fed well system. The pump was really only used for half of its capability in that it only had to pressurize the water system in the house. The water source was close to the pump, and the pump was below the level of the tank outlet. Northern Tool, I put my order number on this post so you can see that my order is legitimate, and find any necessary information to contact me. Is it possible I got a 'lemon' of a pump and tank? I hope that is the case, based on the other reviews I've read. If it isn't, quality and testing are lacking at the point of manufacture. I'd be veryy hesitant to buy another pump of this tank and pump October 23, 2012

Excellent Shallow Well Pump I got this pump for a 1,200 gallon holding tank. It works perfectly. I especially like it because it comes with its own water tank, saving buying a separate tank. The price is reasonable. The only improvement I can suggest is a cutoff switch which would turn the pump off if the water level in the source tank drops to a certain minimum level. October 12, 2012

The pump that could. This is an excellent pump. It is small, but delivers enough water to run two pulse sprinklers at full pressure. Set up was not complicated. Anyone could install this pump. I use the pump to run a sprinkler system for my yard. I have been very pleased with the amount of water this pump delivers. It is perfect for yard irregation. My neighbor was so impressed with my pump that he bought one also. If there is a negative it would be the pressure switch. It is factory set at 20 - 40 psi. I believe a pressure setting of 30 - 50 psi would be more effective. No complaints about this pump or the way it performs. With a 2 year warranty it is worry free. October 8, 2012

Great pump very quiet Awesome piece of equipment very reliable much cheaper than Wayne pumps and Wayne pumps need alot of small pieces not included you have to purchase and assemble and then put it all together. This is least expensive pump as well I returned my Wayne pump from plumbing supply as it was all in pieces and not all included. This pump came all assembled and ready to use. AWESOME I used it for my trailer while I was building our log cabin now Im using it in the log cabin September 7, 2012

Great pump for the price I've been using this pump for 3 months now on a daily basis for about 4 hours per day as a pump to water my yard from a 12 food deep well. It works well, is economical (important with a $0.50 cost per kilowatt hour electric rate). I thought it wouldn't be to dependable with such an economical price, but it's held up well and does a great job for the price. Be sure to tighten the connections before gluing your PVC, they are shipped loose August 20, 2012
