Cobalt drill bit set
These bits work great on anything. They stay sharp. A good product.

Don't do well with metal
Had these for about 6 months now and already a bunch of bits are dull after making one or two holes. Waster of money, should have bought solid cobalt.

Update on these "drills"
I've had these drills for a year now. When I first got them a couple were OK. After having them for a year these are the last drills I go to. I have found several bent drills in the set. At first I thought I had chucked the bit up wrong. Now when I find a bent bit I just throw them in the trash. This is a complete waste of money. Not even good for drilling holes in wood.
I have even thought of just tossing them all out and using the index for something else. I should never write a review until I have used something for at least 6 months. I appologize to anyone who read my previous review.
If you bought this set and got good ones you were lucky. These are JUNK.

If you can afford it, upgrade
I bought a similar cobalt-coated set from Northern Tool years ago for in the garage and I'm still using them; they are fantastic. So when we were in the market for another drill bit set at work, I recommended these. I was sadly disappointed. Some of the bits were bent and the ones we've used so far are barely better than our dull HSS set these was supposed to replace.

Twist Drill Set
I am not totally satisfied with the quality of these drill bits. They do not hold up will when drilling steel. The quarter inch bit was bent and wobbled. The case is rather flimsy. It was bent when it arrived. The catch is crooked and the drill holders are poorly designed. Yes, you get a lot of drill bits for the price and they are probably ok for soft materials. These drill bits do not measure up to the standard I have come to expect fromNorthern Tool.

A fine set of drills
I bought these drills because I have a small machine shop and mechanics shop. I have only used a couple of these drills but the ones I used cut through steel like it was butter. The others will do the same. The extra small bits are a plus. I also work on motorcycles. The smaller bits are perfect for cleaning out carb. jets. The accuracy is good unless maybe you are launching rockets into out space and I suspect they would do even that.
I'll be buying at least 2 more sets for my sons that are in tech school. They'll always need a good set of drill bits.

flimsy case
Drill bits are very nice, cuts well through metal using drill press at slow speed, case is flimsy and small bits fell out during shipping and were hard to find, latch is a joke but this set will be used at the drill press so that is not important to me. Extra bits are nice. Be sure to use lubricant when drilling and these should last a long time

works as expected so far...
Works good. I used them on wood and plastic so far. Have not tried on metal yet. Metal box seems fine, all were all organized in in thiers slots on arrival.

Very good, not "excellent" quailty
Drill dimensions were determined by micrometer measurements to be precise to the nearest ten thousandth of an inch below a quarter inch diameter, and precise to the neared thousandth of an inch above that diameter. This probably meets SAE standards, but not ASME standards.
Drills are sharpened to an "average" angle between the angle used for very hard steels and the angle used for soft metals such as copper or brass. Thus steel drilled with these bits will chip as brass should when brass is drilled, and steel does not leave twisted fragments as it would if the face angle was steeper. If extremely close tolerance holes are needed to be set in steel, this is not accepable.
Thus for close tolerance holes in steel, the drills would need to be re-pointed - but it that is done, the cobat coating (which is only about .0.0005 inches thick ) will be lost - and so will the durability the cobalt coating provides.

Fantastic Wife Gift to Husband
I am not educated in what drill bit sets are about, and originally I came home with a "screwdriver set" from a retail outlet, when my husband said he needed a "drill bit set". Looked the same to me!! Anyway, I found the 145-piece set in a neighbor's catalog, and had it sent to him (my husband would immediately open it on delivery, if he saw it was from Northern Tools) and he was thrilled with his Christmas gift, which is already using, although I don't know how in the world ANYONE could use ALL of those bits. But men tend to make something out of everything and accomplish it!! Thanks for making THIS Christmas gift so easy!
